My personal opinion is the 6.5 because of bullet selection and also the ability to load heavier bullets. I would feel a lot better with a 140 accubond from a .264 win mag headed towards an elk than I would with the .25-06

I have shot a 25-06 for 20 years and love it. However, in comparing to two you listed, the .264 outperforms the 25-06 hands down.
.264 - 140 gr at 3100 = 1500 pounds of energy at 750 yards and 1000 pounds at 1000 yards.
25-06 - 115 gr at 3100 = 1500 pounds of energy at 300 yards and 1000 pounds at 650 yards.
In my opinion, 25-06 is a great varmint to light skin big game round. The .264 is s great all-around for most big game animals in North America.

"ELK" wasn't specifically mentioned in the thread

"25.06" : too much for PD's. outstanding longrange RockChuck gun, outstanding predator cartridge. antelope, deer and that size game it excels - never was meant to be an elk round IMO, sure it will kill an elk but unless that's the ONLY rifle in the battery WHY ?

"264 Win Mag": never have owned even one so I can't comment - I've known 4 or 5 old school elk hunters that thought it was invented to kill elk

25-06 is one of the most under-rated cartridges out there.

Anything shooting a 6.5mm bullet is among the most over-rated, particularly on the internet.

Wide range of bullet weights, high BC projectiles going at high velocities

Yeah that is the first thing that comes up whenever cartridge comparisons are the topic. And I can't argue with the numbers because the 6.5's excel in those areas.

But most hunters tend to over-estimate their likelihood of needing such advantages. You could shoot dozens of animals before a situation arises where a 6.5 actually makes any sort of difference, yet everyone and their dog will jump online and tell you that you're a fool if you pick anything but a 6.5 creed for your next rifle.

I'm not disputing their effectiveness. I take issue with the hype surrounding them, hence my comment about 6.5's being overrated.

GREAT cartridge the 25.06 - with 75 V-max's it's death under blue skies to R Chucks and coyotes and anything in between

I started reloading last year. My 25-06 will cloverleaf 110 grain Accubonds. I hope they do as well on whitetails.

I can see your point as 90% of shooters will never shoot there caliber of choice to its full advantage. The question of 25/05 vs 264 win mag that started this thread isn't exactly going to be an apples to apples comparison. However, that being the question it is fair and accurate to say the 264 win has many advantages over the 25 except for maybe varmits. We really need some more details from the OP for the use of this rifle.

Ballistically, many, yes.

But I, for one, consider reloading component and ammo availability an advantage for the 25-06.

And you can add in numerous factory rifles chambered for the round.

Of course, it can be built into a lighter, more compact rifle (maybe the #1 consideration for me - and it can be had in my favorite Kimber Montana)

Less recoil and muzzle blast.

Longer barrel life.

The .264 is a great cartridge. I might own one someday. But whether it would get carried more than a light, accurate .25-06 would depend more on the rifle itself than the chambering.

25/06 for the win!!

Honestly tho I think the real reason 6.5 is getting love is because it's a new niche to sell to. I'm still hung up on 30 cal magnums but that's because having a ****off gun in bear country is imperetive. At least that's what I tell myself.

next rifle will be a fast twist 6mm of sorts. 105 bergers Kills everything in North America with ease and shoots lights out past where most real hunters should shoot.

Bears live in North America.

You can go down the long road of BC and bullet drama or just buy the one that makes you feel warm and gushy when you pick it up.
