243 Win Loads for Deer

Just getting into the 243 Winchester caliber. Looking for bullet/powder combinations for mule deer. It looks like 90-100gr is what most people use? Any experiences would be great to help me get started.

Our favorite hunting loads have always been 100 grain bullets with a stout load of IMR 4350. Nosler partitions or Sierra pro hunters.

The most accurate load in many has been a moderate charge of h4895.

I also load em with Win 760 - fwiw, the powders have similar burn rates. The NPs get nice penetration with a little larger target grouping. The Sierra PHs will shoot tight.

Sierra is not making the Pro Hunters right now.

Find some discontinued factory loaded 100 gr Winchester Power Max bonded. Bad a** rounds for penetration and expansion.

My experience with the 243 has been great on deer and antelope with the right bullet. Used to use the Hornady 100 gr interlock. That was a hit or miss on finding the deer or even blood if you didn’t see them go down. Switched to a 75 gr VMax with much better results. They don’t leave much blood either but haven’t had a critter go more then 40 yards after the shot. Once I run out of those I’m going to the 87 VMax if that gun, it’s a slower twist barrel otherwise I would go with the 108 eldm. I’ve been steering clear of the interlock style bullets in any gun. With the 75 vmax I’m using varget powder.

Assuming this is a factory 10 twist….work up towards pressure with H4350 under a 95NBT, rarely disappoints

I chose 80 TTSX to try, and 95 BT's as well.

90 gr. Nosler E-tip (Great bullet. Son used it with one shot at 350 yards for his first elk!)
90 gr. Nosler Accubond. (Awesome bullet as well. It will work very well for you.
95 & 100 gr. Nosler Partition. (Never a bad choice.)

Any of these four listed will work very well for you.

95 gr nosler BT with Imr or h4350 for me. My farmer buddy uses 75 gr vmax for his daughters he’s got 4 13 - 29 gets there whitetails in PA every year. Recovery within 50 yards.

95 gr sst and imr 4064. Been using this load in my dads .243 since the sst first came out. Many dead white tails, mule deer, and antelope.

No comments on the powder but a second on the different variations of the Barnes X bullets for the .243. Have never recovered one.

My wife’s shoots 100 grain corelokts better than anything else but 85 grain ttsx are also roughy on whitetails

my son shoots 85gr barnes tsx. it’s killed sitka blacktails, antelope and white tails with no problems. we’ve also shot 100gr gamekings hunting white tails with no issues. i think we use varget for the barnes and h1000 for the gamekings but would have to loo at my notes

I've had a savage.243 for years that I bought to step my kids into deer hunting. I use 90g Nosler ballistic tips over IMR 4831. My three sons all shot their first deer with this load with the same rifle. Grandson hunts for the first time this year....see if he can keep the track record alive

I also shoot the 95gr Ballistic tip over 4350. Just picked up another 500 of them!

If you want to try a mono bullet I have a box of 44 Hornady CX 90 grain that you can have for free ( Maybe kick down to cover the shipping cost , flat rate $10 ?) My .243 wouldn't stabilize them and had to drop down to the 80 grain. If they work for you I'll make you a deal on a new box of 50 of the same.
