Move there if you are going to complain about having to wait to draw a tag. Or, put in to draw and not just build points every year, you may get lucky. 5-6 years of point building and not looking into what zone or pieces of land to hunt in that time? Good luck with your hunt. This will be my 6th year drawing points, so hopefully ill get a chance to come to IA.
Just need to do some research and figure out what public land to hunt and zone.
Exactly, and he hunted a place he was familiar with…he hunted that area before.Wait, I thought trail cameras gave you such an unreasonable advantage that you couldn’t NOT kill a monster…
Oh wait, this guy hiked in and hunted near deer sign? That still works?
Absolutely and you can share it now with him and his 100 closest friends.Apparently the guy who DIDNT kill that deer will give you spot to hunt…
I’ve seen a trail cam pic of him and his body was average at best. Could’ve been old and rutted down, going downhill from age, or been infected with EHD. The fact that he has survived EHD for a few years gives me hope maybe some resistant genes have been spread to the herd for future generations.Maybe just the awful pose, but he looks sick.
Sounds like you need to buy some private land and quit telling people how to hunt public land. The issue with the trail cameras on public in Iowa is that it only takes 1 knothead to completely blow up a small area. When you do your research on public land in Iowa you will find that there isn’t much. We don’t have thousands upon thousands of acres across the state like out West. What there is already gets hammered during gun season and resident tags are valid statewide. As a result, guys can and do travel when a deer like this gets mentioned on social.
In the part of the state where this deer was killed there is a handful of public spots. When word gets out, just like out west, these relatively small areas are ruined for the next few years. The part of the state this buck was killed is already under incredible stress from EHD, and the last thing it needs is more small bucks and does killed by guys who didn’t see another 230.
The guy that killed the deer did everything right and used the intel to his advantage. I got no problem with his success. However, he is also a guy with a significant amount of his own private to hunt where he’s killed some tremendous bucks. Had pictures and location of this deer not been readily available, maybe a guy from out of state that’s waited 6 years to draw a tag would’ve been blessed with an opportunity at a deer like this.
Public is public for sure, and human nature these days is for some to brag about big deer they’ve seen and haven’t shot. As a NR that plans to hunt public in Iowa, you more than anybody else, has a vested interest in limiting the amount of intel that is available to residents that can hunt anywhere in the state. Right now it’s a free for all and NR hunting public are impacted the most when you have to travel to hunt here.
