Just picked up a 300 RUM and have some 230 bergers I want to try in it, anybody know a good safe starting load point? Have about 15 lbs of H1000 so would prefer to use that

Here's a pic of it!

Nice rig!! Give us the details !! I'm guessing you will need a 1-9 twist for those pills. What kind of powder do you plan to use?

87.5 grains of h1000, 3.65 coal. Berger will tell you max is 85 grains. I went up to 88.5, which was about max in my gun.

Its a Lawton Action, 28" Proof barrel 1:10 twist, MPI stock, Jewel Trigger, Muscle brake.

Using H1000 powder

I did a ladder test this week and my faster node was between 87.4-88 I also started seeing pressure signs at 88.5 grains, going to load some up at 87.5 at different seating depths and shoot them this week

I have been shooting the 230s befor they came out on the market and I love the accuracy and high bc I'm getting 2976fps with 91.7grains o rotumbo through my 300rum sendaro and I'm not pushing it, I'm an outfitter so I see it all coming into camp I have never lost an animal but I do have to do a lot of follow up shots to finish the animal and have found the bullet in the animal after completely hole and all together just bent I sent it into bob beck to get some answers and they couldn't understand why but I am going to the nosler long range, the thing I loved about the 230s was the ballistics are off the charts compared to the other bullets but I personally like a bullet that mushrooms out.

Blacktail, I don't understand your statement, why are you switching?

Blacktail, I am interested in what 230 you are using. Is it the thicker jacket Target with a .743 BC or the OTM with a thinner jacket and the .718 BC. Also interested in the distance and impact velocity of the bullet that didn't open and why it didn't pass through. Reason I ask is we have taken may elk with the OTM and always got expansion and no less then 1 1/4" exits. Don't take this as me doubting you at all. I am just very interested in first hand reports of long range bullet performance to learn all I can.

Thanks
Jeff

And for what it's worth here is a photo of a 230 OTM Hybrid that was recovered next to a new OTM 230 Hybrid. That said any bullet will perform different in different situations and strange things do happen.

Well do to working to much and crappy weather I finally got out to the range to shoot this beast, I did a ladder test and loaded up some rounds at different seating depths as berger recommends its obvious one shot way better than the rest!

After I figured out which depth shot the best I ran home loaded up some more and went back to the range, went to 600 yards to test my data, had a constant 10 mph wind so I held 2 moa each shot, for the wind conditions I'm super happy with this group

I ended up loading these with 87.4 grains of H1000 and they liked being .090 off the lands the best so I went with it, now I just need to find a bear to try them on!

Oh and I'm getting a validated velocity of 3010 fps!

Well I have forgotten that I was on this forum I did try to change to the 190 lr accubond and holy crap I can't get them to shot at all so I guess I'm staying with these things the whole reason I was going to switch was the bullet failure was great, and yes I did shoot both the bullets and came out with both results I bumped it up today 3047 fps and still shoots lights out, I just wished I could get the 190s to shoot

Blacktail. If you saw no expansion above 1700 fps impact velocity on more than one instance I would be for pulling those bullets and getting a different lot. Reason I say this is we have taken many many elk and even several soft antelope with them from a 300 win with a MV of 2775. Even antelope over 800 yards had golf ball to tennis ball sized exits. Not doubting you in any way. But please let us know what the next ones do for you. Even from a 300 win at 180 yards they have always exited the far side of an elks rib cage for us with large exit holes. I am anxious to see what we can learn from your experiences.

Jeff

Had similar instance of no expansion with Berger 140's in my LR 280 . These were the first Berger hunting vlds. When I switched to newer lot numbers all changed and the wound devastation followed. Now I'm happy.
