My wife is new to guns. I got her a 6.5cm weatherby camilla which she loves, but she needs a lot more trigger time to get proficient. She does not enjoy the loud report and recoil of centerfire guns. I’m wondering how difficult and expensive it would be to build her some kind of clone in .22lr. I can get a Camilla stock from weatherby. Can a gunsmith retrofit a cheaper barrel action, something like a savage markII, to fit this stock? I could also get her the same weatherby 2 stage trigger so it would feel similar. Just curious how involved this kind of a project would be. Ive always been a pretty simple man with my stock 30-06 so all of this is pretty new to me.

Another thought is to reload some reduced recoil loads for her to practice with. H4895 and trail boss powder can both be used for reduced loads. Use factory second bullets to save some money.

That’s a good idea. I actually picked up some subsonics for her already but haven’t been out to the range yet.

The 6.5 Creemore doesn't have a lot of recoil and I wouldn't think that it would be much of an issue. One thing that I notice with most everyone is that when shooting at reactive targets, they seem to notice the recoil a lot less. Steel plates, spinning plates, gallon water jugs, and things like that make great targets. Another thing that seems to make the recoil less is by having your wife or whoever shoot with double hearing protection on. Wear soft plugs under ear-muffs. One way to get good practice too is to take her outside with an empty rifle and have her use A-Zoom snap-caps and do a lot of dry firing. Let her shoot in several positions so she gets used to them and can keep the crosshairs on what she is shooting at when the trigger breaks. Worth it's weight in gold. Get her shooting over a hunting pack and things she might use on a hunt.
With the snap caps (I'd buy 4), she can load them in the magazine just like she is hunting and just is a more practical way to practice than loading one at a time.

I don't feel that the .22 LR has to fit her just exactly like her Weatherby but the more important aspect would just be good consistent practice is what's most important. I know a .22 rifle is not very loud but I would still have her wear ear plugs when shooting. They say it's loud enough to hurt our ears over time. Actual trigger time and practice is more important than the .22 being exactly like her .22. That being said I would get a .22 LR in a bolt action. I have a CZ bolt action .22 with a 5 round magazine for it. It has outstanding accuracy and is fun to shoot. If you have the crosshairs on the target when the trigger breaks, it's a hit target. Outstanding .22's they make.
