I’ve been reloading for a while now but this is the first time I’ll be extending my coal load is 73gr eld-m, I want to load them with a 2.425 coal instead of the standard 2.250 length, My question is about increasing the powered capacity I’ve run it in GRT and can get up to 25gr of 2208/varget. How do I best approach my loads when increasing it like this.

Thanks in advance boys

Do you have a chronograph? Running your bullet out relieves the case capacity issue, but doesn't affect your load pressure much. By that I mean you may no longer have a compressed load, but your max load doesn't jump 2 grs of powder. As always, work up slowly and look for pressure signs.

I do have one, that’s what I had no idea about, so best to start as I would with a “standard “ load and work up slowly, got it

What made you decide to load that long?

Was thinking of getting a bit more powder in there but didn’t realise about pressure remaining the same. Rifles a Howa s/a so have the room to load longer.

The 73 was designed for AR magazine length.
I don’t use it but 25grains of Varget will be fine, I load more than that with 80s.
Give it a try there.
I would be more inclined to pull them back to .030 off because I find more consistency there, particularly with non match bullets

I see, I’ll try 30 off and work my way up on powered. Would it be worth lengthening the freebore to load out longer with the heavier pills? I ideally want to use the 77tmk but out of stock in New Zealand

Or would it be worth going 223 wylde to help with pressure as well?
