It is commonly accepted here that 5.56 ammo is fine in our 223 Tikkas.

What are folks’ thoughts/experiences with the new NAS3 cased 5.56 loads?



My thought is that since they are still within safe limits for 5.56 chambered guns, they should be fine in any rifle that handles 5.56.

But there are plenty of folks on here with more experience and knowledge than I have, so please share your thoughts/analysis.

I've been running hornady frontier 223 55gr for practice and I've had maybe 4 in the last maybe 300 rounds that won't allow my bolt to close. They've shot fine in my AR when I swap them over out of curiosity. Anybody else have that issue? Factory stock 223 tikka action / bolt / barrel.

Hornady Frontier can be all over the place. Some lot #’s are really good, some bad, some ok.

I wish there was a better option locally instead of ordering online. I have some ADI 55gr on the way though, so I guess I'll be convinced here soon.

It’s easier to order online these days then run out to 2-3 local stores and end up disappointed in what they carry.

Found some Norma Golden Target 69 gr for my Blaser 223 (1:10 twist) for 50¢/rd…shoots well at 100 yds.

Norma website says .393 G1 which is better than what Sierra says the 77 SMK is at .372 G1 (I’m a bit dubious).

Absolutely. I have a buddy, big dairy farm, that shoots the hell out of everything with 55 grain VMAXs. Most casual shooters/hunters will buy whatever is cheapest (so 55 grain soft points). That’s the market…we are not.

Applied Ballistics have .322 G1 (.165 G7) for the RUAG 69gr — I imagine it’s very close, if not identical. Those are the numbers I plan to start with when I get a chance to try it out

I finally found another source for 69 gr GTX bc online…JBM Ballistics shows G1=.395

The RUAG has a blunter nose than the GTX

Yesterday was my last day to deer hunt. 3 shots and 3 dead whitetail does. Tikka supressed 223, 77tmk. Approximately 75, 125 and 250yds. I watched all three get wobbly and quickly tip over. An eagle wanted to share my harvest.

I'm shooting a match with this ammo in two weeks. I'll try to remember to update what the BC trues out at when I can stretch it out past my 300 yard range.

I can all but guarantee it's not .393 G1 though. I'm starting at .330 (still great) in AB and expecting it to be a touch lower than that.
