22 Mag vs 17 HMR....does anyone choose a 22 Mag anymore?

I have a couple spots I call that’s rimfire only. The 17WSM does a nice job

i probably have close to 100-120 large jackrabbits in the bag with a 17 hmr. around 8-10 coyotes in the last few years. 3 this year on the run 75-110 yards. 2 were dead by the time i walked up and one needed a second. pretty lethal with a decent hit while im fairly close. buddy shot one 145y broadside this jan and it didnt get up. 17 hmr is ususally slight better in wind than a 22 wmr, thats just the facts.

i did have a bad run on rabbits trying those tough winchester 17 hmr bullets. not the best, thats for sure. 20gr vmax puts them down fast.

for coyotes its not my first choice, but if your close, its just fine.

I’ve had both. 22 mag has more smack down thru 100 yds, after that I prefer the 17 HMR for better accuracy and less wind drift. I love my Marlin 17 HMR for small varmints like prarie dogs out to 150 / 175 yds depending on the wind!

I don’t consider the 17 HMR a good coyote killer unless you have a close shot and I don’t think the 22 mag is optimal past 125 yds.

Highly recommend the CZ 457 guns and many of them come threaded from the factory.

The flatter trajectory of the 17hmr is great and usually accurate with the right ammo. The 22 wmr will penetrate better on anything big enough for it to matter. Obviously this depends entirely on the bullet of choice and there is a good variety of each in 17 and 22.
