Looks like I struck out on getting a high country mule deer tag. I want to spend some time up there anyway and shooting some whistle pigs would be fun.

Does anyone have a favorite 22 ammo for that size of animal? I usually just shoot cheap stuff but its pretty inconsistent in velocity. I would really like to be able to take 150 yd shots with confidence.

No marmots but I have shot a lot of woodchucks with rimfires. .22lr had a lot of them make it back into their burrows if I stretched ranges past 75 yards. I found the .22 WMR and .17's were more effective. CCI's stinger ammo did benefit my .22lr's, if that they shot for you they'd be my pick.

I would shoot the ammo that is the most accurate in YOUR rifle. and shoot for the head shots. .22lr ammo varies a LOT in accuracy for particular guns. I have a target barrel .22 lr that I built that will shoot nickel size groups at 100 yds in calm conditions with Eley ammo but struggles to shoot 2 to 3" groups with other ammo. Shooting 150 yds with a .22lr will be a challenge. I venture to say most body shot marmots would not be recovered at that distance.
I did kill a 100 lb boar hog with a solid lead point .22 lr at 75 yds chest shot so anything is possible.

Having shot some woodchucks with 22s, I wouldn’t choose a 22 lr for marmots unless I was limiting myself to head shots. If legal in the state you will be hunting, I would just use whatever rifle you would normally be hunting deer with.

Are you talking about ELEY match ammo?
