I am playing more with my 22 creed Tikka prefits from Preferred in 18”, 16”, and 14” barrels. (We have 18” and 20” barrels in stock. We don’t have 16 or 14” in stock.)

I made a T3 into an SBR with a stamp, so I could run a 14” barrel and I had one cut to 16”. Here is some velocity data:

Easy handloads with 80 grain ELDx I use for break in and testing barrels:
14” 2730 fps
16” 2810 fps
18” 2900 fps

Factory Hornady 80 ELDx ammo:
14” 2840 fps 1855 fps at 650 yards @ 4000’ DA
16” 2935 fps 1793 fps at 750 yards @ 4000’ DA

Here is data for my 14” and 16” from AB at 4000’ DA:

I don’t understand DA well enough to know how this would impact me in my location. I hunt primarily at home at 1500’ above sea level.

I’ve been considering a 22CM rebarrel, but this does not appear to provide better distance than my 6.5CM running 95 gr varmint rounds.

Open to suggestions.

DA is temp and station pressure. The colder the temp the more dense the air, so the DA is lower. It goes up and down with pressure as well. Humidity affects it, but not by much.

The Hornady factory box velocity of 95 Vmax is 3300 fps out of a 24” barrel. That is very close to a 16” 22 creed.

Assuming 30 fps per inch from 24-16” the 6.5 drops to 3050 fps. It 22 creed starts to beat it. Run the lighter 22 cal bullets and the velocity increase can beat the 6.5.

But, all that is based on ONLY on drop and velocity.

I want a WIND CHEATER shooting past 300 yards— that’s the benefit of higher BC smaller caliber bullets.

Look at wind drift in these two… The higher BC .22 cal bullets definitely have the edge. The 6.5 is the adjusted speed for a 16” barrel so apples to apples.

Wind 1 is 10 mph and Wind 2 is 15. Look at the difference.

FYI, take any two bullets with the same BC and the same velocity and the drop and drift are the same. It’s one reason smaller caliber high BC bullets are good for hunting.

Thank you. I am learning a lot as I move into beyond 300 yrd club. I’ll do some reading as the humidity levels in my area are consistently 70%+. This is one reason I am finishing my shop so I can shoot in the AC. Just to close to jungle conditions most of the summer in Texas. I am also curious how mirage is impacted by humidity. My goal is to become proficient to 600 and was looking at the 22CM as “buying” my way into increasing my hit %. Ammo selection has held me back to this point. I may stick with the 223 and 6.5 until my%’s improve enough to justify the 22CM.

My thought with the 22CM is it was much easier to “cheat” the wind than the 223. I have noticed the 223 even with 75 or 77 gr seems to suffer from wind drift more past 300.

The 22 Creedmoor allows for the longer, higher BC bullets and much more velocity over the .223 rem.

Ballistically, velocity AND high BC are what you want to cheat wind. The heavier for caliber bullets always do best in wind.

Humidity doesn’t have a huge affect. I set it to 50% and forget it for hunting inside 600.
