Building a 22 creed and had ordered a 1/8 twist 4 contour builder. Was sent an email that the 8 twist barrel is backordered, but they have a 7 twist they could send me so I took it. My main goal in this is still to shoot the 77 grain scenar, however, with the 7 twist, what do you think is the lightest bullet you could shoot thru it without it blowing up in mid air? Wondering if I could get away with a 50/55 grain bullet (cheap high volume ground squirrel shooting)

Depending on the bullet- yes.

Might as well order both as high volume ground squirrel shooting won’t take long to toast a 22 creed barrel

You're asking a bunch out of the bullets. A 7 twist is smoking at 3800fps. Consider that 14 would be closer to optimal.

I have a 22-250 Ackley with a 7 twist. I use 55 grain M193 FMJs while fireforming at roughly 3600fps and have no separation issues. I’ve rang steel out to 600 with it.

I’m not sure I’d run a varmint bullet like that.

I built mine with a 7 but I’m throated long for the 88s and 95s. Anything lighter than that and I’d absolutely go 8 twist which might still be iffy with the light Varmint bullets.

Guys have issues blowing up 88 elds with a 1-7 twist. It may depend on the groove count and the throat condition. As it gets rough and firecracked , thats when issues usually show up. But I'm sure like most things...it depends. I had the exact same situation. Woulda had to wait for 8 twist criterion but they had 7s in stock so I went with it. So far the 88s r shooting fine. But I won't be surprised if I start poofing certain bullets. So I wish I waited for the 8. But they don't last too long so there's that!😁

I may just stick with the 77 grain scenar and call it good - I wont do a turn of ground squirrel shooting, but maybe 150-200 rounds a year.

I run an 8tw w/ 77tmk @ 3550 from a 22" barrel. I am also stable with 85gr rdf, 85.5 bergers and 80 eldm. I think at creed speeds a 7.5tw would work for all the heavies at my 2k-6k elevations I usually shoot at. For the 77s, I'd go 8tw.

1-8 twist is proven to run the 88 eld very well at sea level. No need for more unless you want to make em go poof. I DO think the 5 groove barrells are easier on jackets than the 3s.
Basically, with a 7 twist, shooting 88s feels like your getting away with something, till ya don't, throat gets rough, etc.

Good info here gents.

@khuber84 thanks for sharing. I feel better about my 1:8 Brux on order. Want to sling 80 ELD-M at normal speeds (3200ish) and not lean heavy into the the velocity. Sounds like 1:8 is GTG

I ordered a 7 twist, but I'm in CA so this is mainly for 77gr LRX or maybe trying the 83gr Hammer. I'll likely test it with 88gr ELDM as well in case Nevada wants to hook me up with a reason to use some lead soon.
