ive got a gen 2 swfa 3-15 and planning on putting it on the 223 tikka trainer im getting.. for now. my question is for all those that have a 223 trainer already.

is a 20 minute rail needed to get out to say 1000? after looking at some charts it doesnt really seem like it but wanted to make sure. im battling between the UM Tikka rings or getting the SRS 20moa rail and some rings.

I would check the amount of travel in that scope and where you want your zero range to be. It is possible the 20moa rail would cause you not to be able to zero at 100yds. 10moa may be more practical.

First off I have never shot my 223 this far and have not confirmed this data at this distance. For my 18” Tikka shooting BH 77 TMKs, my ballistics app is saying up 11.3 Mils at 1000 for my current DA of 4000’. I would not bother with a rail for this. Frankly it’s a long poke for a 223. My mv data is estimating about 1050 fps at that distance. Not saying it’s not a good choice for a trainer and more. I’ve shot mine out to 600 quite a bit.

i dont know how often i would actually shoot 1000 with it but i know will be trying at some point. ive got a buddy whos got a 1000 yard spot he leaves a plate at and i need to be able to out shoot his 7prc to make a point haha!!
ill probably be closer to that 600-800 for my longest range shots. obviously never taking a shot at an animal at that range.

but in all seriousness this is useful info. ive seen some posts about guys only needing around the 6 mil mark for zeroing at 100 which would leave almost 30 mils of elevation travel in the scope.. but im also a dumb crayon eater so i could be totally off.

I would really like to just run a set of low rings from UM and call it a day. save my cash on having to get a rail and be able to get into some other options or have more ammo money.

No, you do not need a rail for that combo. A 20moa rail will work fine however.

Well the one I’m looking at comes with a 0 moa rail and the 20 moa would be extra but I’m thinking the same thing that it wouldn’t hurt so might as well.

If it is a Tikka with factory pic rail, that is a very good setup and they bond the rail to the action- I would shoot it as is.

im going to be a standard blued T3x. it will be my training until my boy is big enough to start shooting with me and then ill slap in it a compact stock for him.

If im quick enough to get a rokstok ordered when they open up ill trade it out between my 223 trainer and the 6.5cm im working on putting together.

You should be good to go with the UM rings. I can dial 600-700ish yards with a Trijicon credo 3-9 1in diameter scope, Sportsmatch rings, and a 18 inch barrel.

Thanks! im thinking i dont need the 20moa. that 223 will run out of steam before i would need a rail from what ive gathered.
