Had an incredible bowhunting with some great friends for bison in the Sandhills this January. This is by no means a backcountry hunt, but man is it a fun spot and stalk opportunity on an awesome critter. These bulls are considered “free range” by SCI for super 10/NA29, and it is a low fence that they can jump, but it’s a private land (80k acre) hunt.

Compared to the Henry Mountains or something, this hunt and outfit has a system for handling the meat ensuring no loss. Honestly, having dealt with two of these things, I have no idea how anybody is messing with one in the backcountry without losing a huge percentage of the meat. Huge critters!

Highly recommend the hunt - very affordable, meat is delicious, and a great thing to do in January when not much else is going on!

Started the day from the truck, glassing and riding hills, looking for the herd of bulls. Once we found them, we moved in and with the hilly terrain, were able to move around and pop up pretty close at times, but no doubt when they see you in the wide open it’s a problem. With the group of bulls standing together, you can get a bit more time to rip off the bow shot, and i ended up shooting mine at 70 yards, and hitting right through the heart. 82lb bow 700 grain arrow with an iron will SB, got a pass through, and watched him sprint maybe 120 yards and go down. My friend who was out there with me shot his at 84 - also a heart shot, though no pass through. See some pics here - we will have a video of it before long as well!Bison_Edited-81.jpg
