2026 NRL Hunter Thread

Not an NRL hunter match but a very similar format. Sportsman series match. They have some in Nebraska, Colorado, and now Wyoming. Field style match. Find, range, and engage targets from 100-1000 in Lagrange Wyoming. Should be a fun shoot. I signed up for it since it’s close to home. Registration just opened for it. I think the only gun restrictions are under 18 pounds, 22-30 cal under 3200 fps.

I'll be shooting the Blue Ridge Big 5 (Spokane, WA) March 20-22 and hopefully the Leupold Relentless Rifleman (Madres, OR) May 29-31. I shot open heavy last year, but this year built an open light setup. My measured weights are below. With a factory suppressor, I'm right at my 12lb 10oz limit.

I'll be at the Blue Ridge shoot well! I missed the sign up, so I'll be an RO and shoot on Friday.

Also planning to shoot the Blue Mountain Big Game Hunter (La Grande, OR) and the Hornady Precision Hunter (Price, UT) if anyone wants to squad up.

So I'm heavily contemplating doing the one day Games in Oregon. This would be my first NRL match thinking of just doing the skills so I can just see if I even like it. One thing is I don't have a tripod. Is a tripod a basic necessity to even have a chance at fun in the NRL Hunter? Thanks

I shot three of them last year with no tripod and I had a blast.

I just used my pack vertically at the glassing stake and either threw it down to shoot off or did my usual seated with crossed trekking poles. Seated with trekking poles is great for hunting and practicing field positions at the range, but was a little cumbersome for being on a timed stage with multiple targets.

I also did not use a bipod at the first two.

It definitely hurt the score, but not the fun factor.

I've shot the Nebraska Sportsman's Series for the last few years, they have been a blast! Shooting my first NRL Hunter next month. The main differences that I've been made aware of are target sequence and rifle specs. An NSS match might have a 10 prairie dog stage rather than the max of 4 targets at an NRL Hunter. Talk your RO onto the target you are engaging, because you don't have to engage them in any particular order. No prize table at individual matches, they will have a finale match for that. It's been said that NSS matches are geared towards the new shooters, but there are some strong competitors also. Most matches have been around 10-12 stages, 200-1000 yards, 80 percent inside 700.

I did 3 full 2 days without a tripod (then i got one and did 2 more and a bunch of one days). Tied 9th in OH at one without. There were a few tough positions where it would've been handy. But after i got it, ive only shot tripod standing a few times, and im pretty certain you couldve found a way to do without. Its completely up to the match directors though. They could setup the course of fire that requires a bunch of standing shots.

Take what you have and go have fun. Definitely need a decent way to shoot high kneeling. For me that meant a tall harris bipod and my pack under the rear. Now I use a tall bipod and tripod rear.

The biggest benefit of the tripod for my current system is ranging accuracy. Im essentially a sniper with the laser now. A lot of the places ive shot have been pretty flat. I watched the pros struggle with ranging lollipopped targets. Pretty easy to grab a range 100+ yards too far

I did the same. I was usually faster then most everyone at getting on glass and having the targets found. But my ranging accuracy with a monocular off of the top of the pack was lacking on hard to range targets

Thanks for the info. My fear is, I'll get there and be super frustrated with myself at the "gaming" aspect of it and not do well just because I don't have bags or a tripod. I kind of just want to have the ability to go put myself in duress and have a lot of targets/situations to shoot in.
