Anyone else excited for opener?

Got a veteran dog ready to go and a pup which will be her first season. Hope temps will be cool for opening week. Wish the new MT regulations went into effect this year, but will make the best out of it.

Nice dove. Where did the pudel pointer come from? I got a gsp now and am considering that for my next dog?

How do they compare to the gsp? Any other opinion on the breed?

Always excited. I won’t be able to make the September one grouse opener this year, the first time we’ll be able to go will be the middle of September. I’m running my younger dog through a utility test the fifth and sixth of September.

IVE never owned either breed but I've been around both. Many more PP that GSP. The PP is kuch more likely to swim. The GSP...some do some don't. GSP is going to be much more high energy as a puppy. People say you have to get through the first two years before they start to mellow. If I wanted to go the GSP route, I'd go with a DK.

I like my wirehairs and that breed fits my hunting style the best right now. I also have a breeder that hunts her dogs the way I do and does a great job breeding for cooperative temperament.

But I've been around various breeds and seen pudelpointers training and testing through NAVHDA. I've seen a couple dogs out of Windy Sage that were impressive, one's a VC and the other just scored a 204 in it's UT test. Both have great manners around other dogs and people. I watched a dog from Cross Timber Gundogs run it's UT test with a 204 last week. I was impressed with the dog as well as the breeder that ran him.

I've seen pudelpointers out of 2 other breeders that I would be far less interested in, drive seemed lacking and water wasn't great.

As a whole, thier waterwork is usually more than shorthairs, but less drive in the field if you're wanting to cover a lot of ground. Can get great noses and temperament from both.

We love our shorthair. She’s 38lb pounds but has an incredible drive and an even better on/off switch. Excellent natural retrieve and loves water. I’ve ranged her at almost 1,000 yards a few times while hunting for sharpies. My wife grew up with them. Will always have at least one in the house as far as I’m concerned. Only negative is her hard mouth and how easily she gets cold. We don’t care to force fetch her. Almost a little hesitant to bring her hunting. If something happened to her, I don’t think my wife would ever forgive me haha.

I’ve owned a lab and a draht as well and this particular PP has been very easy to train. We got her from Cedar Woods. Believe that’s how Windy Sage got their start. His schedule didn’t fit ours or else we would have gone through him. A lot of Cedar Woods in their pedigree. She seems very eager to please. I have a feeling she’ll be hyper like our GSP for the first few years as well. She’s currently at bird dog trainer. Will be hunting her as much as I can in Sept. Have a trainer that will be hunting her for the remainder of September. Got a hunt or two planned for SD Pheasant. Will be her first season, so getting exposure and having fun is our goal. Lot of great breeds and breeders out there. Fee like it’s hard to go wrong if you do your due diligence.

I’ve have had 3 gsp. I appreciate the insight though. Like I said I’m toying with the idea of getting a pp next. I’ve gone as far as getting on a list but won’t make a decision until something happens to my current dog.

My current two (one between myself and my parents) passed there na test and one has a jh through akc. I was young and starting a career wish I would have went on to ut.

The two females love water. The male can take it or leave it he would rather hunt than swim but the female is like a tug boat.

Yeah, looks like this one is part of thier breeding program. Got it in Iowa last year.
