2025 NM Elk Draw Thread

Not trying to be a downer as that’s an awesome tag but it’s been an extremely dry winter in southern NM. Keep an eye out for fires and monsoon moisture to give you an idea of realistic expectations. Best of luck

Congrats to all who are successful. As mentioned, unusual very dry winter in Southern New Mexico. Many parts of the Gila, Cibola NFs have had little to nil snow pack. I can’t speak to the Lincoln NF areas but typically over there they have more perennial streams and springs.

As a resident I got lucky, really lucky. Even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then.

Drew my first NM elk hunt. Unit 16E, bow, 2nd season Sept 15th. Likely going solo unless I can convince someone gullible enough to go hike around at 8000ft in 90 degree weather.

It's about 6 hours away from me but I will be doing a lot of hard research and try to get out there maybe once a month before the hunt. I'm committed to putting in that once in a lifetime effort for the opportunity of a great hunt. I am beyond excited and blessed!

I drew a bear tag up there during covid. The USFS was closing down campgrounds and making it impossible trying to close roads.

Hopefully those days are long gone behind us.
