Hello -

I was one of the lucky few to draw a Montana mountain goat tag. However, that is where my luck has ended. We planned to push our hunting into October, and now the weather is killing us. We scouted in September, found goats all over. Now the snow and hunting pressure has moved them to harder to reach spots. We tried camping last week and ultimately the snow and cold took its toll. We recharged at worked for a few days and we are headed back out this weekend, into next week. More snow and cold in the forecast, so we are bringing a trailer and we will day hike this trip.

Any words of encouragement or advice are appreciated. We are trying to focus on south facing slopes with the snow forecast.

Welcome to late season goat hunting!!
I am In the same boat as you, just got packed and ready to head out in the am looking for a Billy!

Keep after it. Even with the weather coming in this weekend there will still be some nice days ahead. Things can turn around quickly on the mountain. We Came out one year with a Billy on the last day of the season! Its not done yet.

You got this, cant wait to see your goat!!

Yessir!! The weather changed quickly this week! It's getting wintry in the high country.

As mentioned, there will still be some nice days in October so be able to take advantage of them!

Be 100% intentional about what you carry, get some micro spikes and put them on before you need them. Be careful up there and go find that Billy! Report back here!

And follow up with a report on how that Durston tent handles it! I just took delivery of one (x-dome 1+) and plan to get a lot of MT winter nights in it!

The reward of a goat will be worth it even more once you get one down. The memories of this hunt will be there forever, and lastly. Any other hunts that might be 'hard' will look easy compared to this one.

Where did you draw for?

Persistence man! If you got it done in one day you wouldn’t be able to look back and see how much of a journey it was and how all the struggles make the outcome even sweeter.

I appreciate the words of encouragement. It all came together last Monday. After locating some goats in the spotter, a grueling 8 hour hike led to a 400 yard shot. Turned out to be a nice 4.5 year old Billy. Definitely a trip of a life time.

Microspikes were an awesome tip we had received earlier and already had in our packs! The durston tent worked exceptional on earlier trips. During the snow storms it also worked well, but snowy nights and sunny days eventually caused big condensation issues. Trekking poles were the most impressive and must needed peices of equipment we had, thankfully I bought some random carbon trekking poles at Costco many years ago!😂 Also the stone glacier zero degree bag I purchased on discount worked extremely well.
