Planted birds are the only option for roosters in our area of Wisconsin. Not quite as fun as the real thing, but still get some good dog work out of it.

Can't see the dogs but they are out there! Had really good dog work yesterday. Older dog had a covey of guns, young dog backed. Young dog pointed a big covey of grouse and old dog backed. Both finds almost 300 yards, neither dog even twitched. Were only 8 guns so I let them fly. Horse flushed when I was 60 yards from the dogs, little wild!

The days catch..

Spent a few days chasing roosters in SD with some good boys and their dogs. Was the first time for both the pointer (quail dog) and the lab (duck dog). My little springer there was real beat up busting through all those cattails but he showed those big dogs how to do it. Gonna miss these days.

Last doodles of the year for us. Found a pocket of birds 20 minutes before shooting close and Otter put up 3 in short order.

How do you guys with pudelpointers like them? Thinking of getting one for my next pup. Any breeder recommendations?

To be fair I've never owned another breed of bird dog, so I have no way to compare to other breeds. I'm a 1 dog household and both my current boy, Leroy, and my sadly-departed-too-young Jethro have been wonderful family members as well as intense hunters.

I'm not a good trainer, and know that I'll never be one to have a fully polished bird dog, but that's just my nature and it suits me fine. I just try not to screw up what he's got within him already.

This young one is still hunting too frantically, and I'm hoping it clicks sooner than later to slow down and hunt smarter. He is fun to watch though. Sitting still for duck hunting will probably be a challenge this young; he wants to go and seek, not sit and wait.

As far as breeders, the list on the NAPPA site is a great place to start.
