Need new tires for a 2024 Subaru Forester.

Looking to get away from the all season car tires. I’d like to get in to a mild all terrain.
Adding some tire weight and losing some MPG isn’t a concern.
They’ll see 1/4 mile long gravel driveway every day and sporadic forest service roads.
Definitely want the Snowflake symbol for winter.

Longevity would be nice but durability and traction are a bigger want.

Thanks.

I have an outback 2020.

Here is my take. I used to investigate traffic mishaps for DOT. Not an expert.

If you want snow performance you need the 3 peak mountain symbol and the letters MS.

You will lose some longevity by having an all season tire that is ok in the winter. They will just be ok, and they will really just be ok, compared to actual snow tires. You will have 80-100 feet less stopping traction depending on speed.

I have Y rated for speed tires on my Subaru 2020 outback here in Germany. You don't need that much speed as you are not driving on the Autobahn, but you still want to be able to go 85 without a problem.

If you take a light truck/suv tire you may lose stability on the interstate.

I would look for a 3 peak mountain tire with the MS, in a regular all season.

Unless you live someplace farther north and have an actual need for snow tires from October to April.

Yokohama Geolander A/T G015, they should be available in 17" and 18" depending on your tire size. They are severe snow rated (3 peak mountain symbol) and have done incredible on both trucks and AWD crossovers. Tire wear has been excellent for an AT tire. As always, keep an eye on tire pressure, rotate on a regular basis and have the balance checked every 15-20K miles. Shops do offer lifetime rotate and balance when you purchase tires from them. Reach out for any other questions. I'm a mechanic and have been in the tire/off-road/performance business my entire life.

Falken wildpeaks are definitely a step up in road noise. Pirelli Scorpion AT’s are about the quietest AT tire I’ve found. Probably not aggressive enough for you, but the Michelin CrossClimates are on both my Subarus and they are great.

I’ve looked at those.
Do they handle the snow pretty good?
How are they in rain and in dry pavement? Any increase in road noise? Thanks.
Haven't had snow here since we got them. Lol

Very satisfactory on dry pavement, great in rain. Better than the visibility.

A little noisier, but not bad unless the radio is off. Even low level radio drowns it out.

That said, I think the Subarus of our vintage are just noisy. It's a 2012. Granted, I've done a ton of sound deadening, but my straight piped 6.7 Powerstroke is much quieter. The newer ones are definitely quieter.

Don’t get the falken wild peaks. They are good off road but are loud on the road and highway. Too blocky of tread for snow and ice.

I just took the wild peaks off my Gladiator in favor of the same tires I’ve used on my Wrangler, Nitto Ridge Grapplers. Got them mounted and balanced yesterday.

As a combo of highway noise not being loud, really good offroad, and still decent enough treated pattern for snow and ice, it’s really hard to beat these tires.

The Ridge Grappler isn't snowflake rated as the OP desires, but I dont have enough personal experience to say if its good or not in snow.

For a crossover you don't want a stiff heavy LT tire. Even the P-rated wildpeak at4w and Ridge Grappler might be a bit too aggressive and heavy. The wildpeak AT-Trail is probably the tire you want. Maybe also look at the BFG Trail Terrain. These are milder ATs designed for crossovers and small SUVs that see offroad use, and they carry the snowflake rating for winter driving.

@BLJ this is the tire that comes on the wilderness editions.

I’m going to get some prices on the Falkens and Yokohamas on Monday.

Anything else? Thanks.

I looked.

The At-trail is what we have.

Minimal snow and ice on mine last winter. They did a lot better than I thought they would. Some slipping but overall they did fine in 4 high with around 20 psi in the tires. Both in very wet snow in the sierras and northern Arizona and very dry powdery snow in Wyoming.

Probably better options for the Subaru.

Another fan of the wildpeaks.

I have them on a 2019 Outback which came with 18" wheels. I dropped top 17" Method wheels and a larger tire. The car is a tank when it snows here in the Catskills. But yes, they are louder on the road.

Many guys on the Subaru owners forum have switched to Nokian Outposts. The Finns know snow.

Assuming the APT version of the Outpost?
