2022 game harvest

So I was hunting with my son last weekend. Was thinking how moments like that were better than shooting a ten pointer that can pull a skidder. Even if we only saw a couple gray squirrels. What are some of your most memorable hunts? Whether it is a buck that was “ten feet between the eyes” or just being afield with someone special

I agree. I spent the day on horseback with my son discussing every elk we have killed since he was 12 (now 36). Excitement for the day was a thunder chicken next to the cliff we were on.

We were following 100 head of elk on day old tracks.

Best hunt I had was a 5 day dry ground lion hunt in NW AZ on horseback with hounds.
My son, who was in high school at the time was with me. No lion, but we had the best time together. we even shipped our saddles to the outfitter so we would e comfortable in our own saddles for our 5 day 20 mile loop per day adventure. A week that may never be topped

I've had a lot of memorable days a field with kids but one that still stands out happened about 20 years ago when my oldest boy was about 6/7. I took him over to a place we called "grocery store" island- place was heavily populated with deer and we usually came home with one or 2.

Day was rainy and windy and not overly warm but we spend the whole day wandering around and I ended up shooting 2. As it was getting towards evening my son asked me what time it was. Thinking he had had enough I asked him if he wanted to head home.

"No", he said, "I just don't want today to end".

I don’t have any kids but my parents moved to the town I settled in three years ago. My dad hasn’t killed a big game animal in over 30 years. He is now 74. He always took me hunting as a kid and now I get to return the favor at 36. He is kicking ass this year. Killed a caribou in Alaska and antelope and mule deer in Montana. So damn proud of him. Love that old man.

My most memorable hunts now are ones with my dad. He's 72. This year was just the tow of us. It was much more expensive then it normally is but I wasn't going to pass up the chance to hunt again with him.

I have to say seeing guys in their 60s on the hill is rare, 70s even more rare and I've only seen one guy in his 80s. That was in Idaho. He was solo archery elk several miles back.

Like hunting with kids or going with inexperienced people, I have to put a little more effort in to help my dad. I have to make sure he brings enough food and water. The right clothes, not too much...And then I need keep an eye on his horse too. But all in all he's super self sufficient.

Over the last 7 years I have set him up with two rifles. A sendero contoured 7mm STW with a great NF scope, and a Kimber MT rifle that's about 6 lbs with scope. So he can ride his horse and sit in his spot with the heavy gun if he wants, or carry the light one. His choice and he loves them both.
