We have the run of the mill 6 variations of tomatoes, 3 pepper variations, zucchini, cucumbers, tons of carrots, white onions, and lettuce. Add in a bunch of rosemary, mint, oregano, basil, thyme and we stay busy. No need for any berry plants as between the Wild Strawberry, Raspberry, and Black Berries in our yard and the in laws we got about 50 jars of jam and buckets full for raw consumption.

My wife does some canning and we trade some of our stuff for pickles her mom makes and honey from a friend.
Last year with just 4 variations of Tomatoes my wife canned 45 jars and honestly could have done 10 more with the left overs....not including what my daughter picked off and ate daily.

Put mine in a few weeks ago, but it's not looking too good. I have very clay heavy soil and tried to mix in some cured manure the best I could so I hope they pull through
As others said Compost will help. Lots of organic matter. If you use grass clippings make sure they are from an untreated lawn. Residual herbicide will bite you. Our small town has a city compost pile(s). It’s the right price as it’s ree to the public to help themselves. Maybe your community has something similar. Amend with gypsum and use a lot. Cover crop your garden if you can and till that in in the spring. I just use left over seed from when we sow grazing covers for our cattle. You won’t change it overnight unless you haul in new soil in.

It’s finally all in. Should have added a lot more dark soil but it will have to do for this year. Rocks, sand and big oaks are going to make it interesting. 13 got taken down last winter, thinking another dozen need to go this winter to bring some more sun in.

First garden so we will see how it goes. Hoping to get enough beans and tomato’s to can a bunch. Chickens and a garden were a bit much to take on in one spring.

Been pretty steady on the beans, peas, zuchini and cucumbers.

Learning a lot about tomato’s, some are finally ripening. My plants took a fricken beating, cages not strong enough to hold them, had to t post all the tomato plants in. Next year I’ll trim and create more structure.Should be canning tomato’s here in a couple weeks, already canning some beans 738060E5-39A9-4721-BD32-FC541FC79C67.jpeg

Thinking about doing this myself but have never given it a run. My summer crop already burned up so I might as well get going on the winter crop. I’m located in the SE as well. Any tips on planting date etc?

I usually wait till the end of Sept, first of Oct. before putting any seeds in the ground.
It's usually just too stinking hot till then. By Nov, things are moderating and the cooler
it gets the better that stuff grows.

Did anyone lose their plants to Japanese beetles?
We had them about a week ago. They wanted the zucchini. They killed the plants. Which was fine by me as I don’t like zucchini that much. I killed the beetles. Don’t use the beetle traps it attracts more of the boogers due to concentration of pheromones according to a horticulturist friend.
