2018 New Zealand Expedition

Be careful. This isn't a particularly large tahr but it was probably my most memorable.

Following this one, that's a trip I'd love to do in the future and about the only way it'd be affordable.

Y'all going to try and do any fishing while your there?

Ndbowhunter- Thank you for all the advice. I'll make good use of it for sure. I'll try to keep all my parts intact while I'm chasing them around the hills. Nice tahr!

Merc- We will do some fishing for sure. I haven't decided if I will bother with the fly fishing gear though. Conventional tackle may make things a bit easier. It is certainly affordable if you give yourself enough planning time.

Dont underestimate the coast or the weather. Too many foreign hunters died last season. Take it slow and dont cross rivers if its raining(dont **** with rivers period, in a truck or on foot, they always win). The east coast is a much safer and easier option for this 'learning' to hunt NZ. and I would start their first, weather is more stable as well.

People who say are Tahr are dumb are most likely shooting young bulls. They are not the smartest critter out but they are not stupid, the terrain they lives in is their main defense. If you are walking in on the coast you will see some Chamois most likely and they are good sport and easier stalking with the bow than Tahr.

You will have a hard time finding stags, the reds have been thrashed this season by helicopters, wild venison price is very good and the result is alot of deer have been put into chillers.

You will get wet, use a pack liner, dry bags AND a rain cover for your pack. 4 season tents are best and you need a floor.

There is not a hell of a lot of Fallow deer hunting in open public land areas, NZ is not like you see on TV where there is 10 species jammed in a game park. Generally you will have to travel to different areas for different species(like any where else in the world).

Enjoy yourself, take it easy and feel free to leave DoC a donation, ALOT of money is spent on tracks and huts.

On a trip back from NZ now (sightseeing only) and after seeing the southern Alps I was left in awe. I am a PNW native and have explored the Washington Alpine Lakes wilderness and Rainier but they pale in comparison. Western coast of NZ is some seriously steep but beautiful country. I was fortunate to see one Red Stag in what appeared to be pre-roar as he was chasing cows. Have a blast and please document it!
