2017 mule deer question

A buddy and I are wanting to plan out first high country mule deer hunt this summer... were sitting on zero points in all states...

1st is nevada but our best odds are the rubies and we're looking at 27% ish odds

As a back up plan I was thinking Utah. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe wasatch is a 100% draw or OTC right???

Main question I have for the wasatch is what will the pressure be like??? Either state we hunt we want to be a min 6 miles in from a trail head and not afraid to go in deeper. This will be our first mule deer hunt but been back pack elk hunting for years now.

He's a resident in Oregon I'm in Idaho we both will be willing to trade info for either Oregon or Idaho for info in either Nevada or Utah

Any reason to not look at ID? If your first choice is the rubies I would think you should really look at ID first.

They did cut tag numbers in rubies. All Utah deer tags are draw not sure what your odds are though. My app shows your odds 90

Utah odds may be hard to predict the next couple years if they close the "loophole"
Pressure will be high everywhere on the snatch.

Aren't there OTC units in both OR and ID? My experiences show that if you can spend some time scouting the unit it will be invaluable. I feel this is even more the case when hunting a unit that is easy to draw. There will be likely be low buck numbers and mature bucks few and far between so knowing a little about the unit will help and if you can hunt it for several years that's when you start finding honey holes.

Yea we've kind of thought some about Oregon. Mostly the problem is my wife is a teacher and we have a 6 month old so any season prior to start of school is a huge bonus for me. Most of idahos hunts are 8/30 with a few draw hunts being 8/15.... nevada and utah's high country has always intrigued me and we have an end goal of wanting to hunt Colorado but would rather "cut" out teeth on high country mule deer closer to home

You have a lot of family stuff going on. Im in the same boat, my wife prefers me to hunt close to home and to maximize my time. It has worked out great I get to know areas might be better that are closer to my house that I normally wouldn't consider, it is the "book". Hunt when you can and hunt hard

The Utah tags are all draw as mentioned above. The Wasatch tags aren't a guaranteed draw either. It shows good odds, but I've had multiple years not drawing as a resident. It does have a lot of good areas that fit what you're describing though. I would think you could draw it this year, or next for sure.
