Hard to envision what you're describing. I looked at mine. I see 1 or 2 threads showing on the barrel but the barrel is seated tight and it's pretty accurate. Was the barrel "loose" on the gun at the store?

I think you nailed it. If you can see threads on the barrel in between the barrel and barrel nut.

Is the head spacing just sloppy in a shotgun? Is it not seated properly? Or is the machining just that poor and the headspace is accurate but every barrel is different?

It looks pretty tight on yours.

The ones I looked at had close to 1/16 inch or bigger of threads showing at the location below.

Just seems like they have a little more threads than needed on most barrels? If the barrel bit is tight I wouldn’t worry.

Mine looks the same as those above. I think if the barrel is tight, it shouldn't be an issue. We're not talking about tight congruences like you would with precision rifles. It's a shotgun.

It is simply extra threads showing past the barrel nut. It has nothing to do with function. It is an aesthetics thing. Savage guns are not aesthetically pleasing anyway. The 220 with remington accutips is a good suggestion if you are limited to slug gun only.

I bought 12 boxes of remington accutips so I hope they shoot well.

I realize the machining is probably loose compared to a centerline rifle. It's my OCD that won't let me look past it. That and the guy at the gun counter also said he wouldn't buy it.

I'll find one.

After my research, I’m torn between a savage 220 and a Winchester SX4 cantilever buck semi auto. My kid is only 10, so either way she’s gonna get the snot kicked out of her, which sucks, so I’m kinda leaning towards the Sx4 because of the recoil.

The sx4 will have a lot less recoil. I handled one yesterday and was surprised at how much the cantilever scope mounting flexed. Probably stiffen up with a scope on it.

My kids are 11 and 13 and have used the 220 for a few years now. Lock it into a heavy tripod and it’s not terrible on recoil. I use a Bog Pod Death Grip tripod and it’s nice and heavy. I’ll keep a hand on one of the legs when they shoot and they’ve never complained about recoil. It helps a lot.

Most (not all) gun counter guys know nothing. The traditional way to headspace a barrel is to cut a shoulder on it and thread the smaller diameter before the shoulder. Obviously there is a spec. Then the reamer for the chamber is run to the proper depth. All the threads are hidden. There is a very small tolerance to have things correct.

The savage system, also now used by a lot of other companies, is to use a barrel nut as a movable shoulder. It is a lock nut. They thread the barrel for a certain distance, thread the nut on, headspace it to the action, and lock it down with the nut. What you are seeing is the cosmetic result of cutting the threads for the nut too far down the barrel (they cut more threads than the nut would cover up once installed). It will not effect function in any way.

I wouldnt worry about a couple threads there as long as everything is tight. I also would not hesitate to send it back if ut did not shoot well. My 220 shoots the accutips ok, and winchester copper impacts great. Try a few different rounds before you pass judgment

Still not too bad compared to what I saw.

How does it shoot?

It is more accurate than it should be with 3” Barnes Vor Tx expander slugs.
Average 1”-2” groups at 100 yards on a bag and bench. It is more accurate than some center fire rifles I have owned over the last 30 years. I can lay out clay pigeons at 150 and 200 yards and have about 60% hit rates from tripod or backpack. We have a 12” gong at 200 yards and can bang it non stop.

Thanks for the tip. I have a good amount if remington accutips. If they don't group I'll give the Barnes a try.
