2 For 2 in Wyoming

I can never save points in the Cowboy state because the general license units are always good to me. Id rather kill a bull like this every year than sit on points for 5-10 years to kill one bigger. There are no guarantees even with a limited quota tag in a “better” unit. No doubt the weather was a little rough this year but it had the elk out early to feed. I saw about 30 elk and at least 2-3 bulls every day. I’m 8 straight there and my partner is new to elk hunting and killed his first bull in his first hunt. 35 years later I still learn something every day I’m out there and I love that. Can’t wait to get back there next year!

I'm the same way. I hunt in an OTC Colorado unit. Have since 2002. There has been 3 years since I didn't kill a bull. 2 of those years were because of my dumb choices.

I would rather hunt every year and be successful than every few years.

Congrats! I just started building points in Wyoming and have a similar philosophy. Just started investigating the state. Looks a little daunting in that the state looks much different on OnX than Colorado and Montana where I’ve hunted before. Looks like most of the state is open country, and the limited “wooded” parts of the star have Wilderness areas, that as an out of state hunter I won’t be accessing. If you have any pointers as to regions of the state that I should be looking at or how to scout for these open areas, I’d love to learn. If anyone has any pointers please let me know.

Good for you!! Awesome story and I would have to agree with you. An elk every year is hard to beat! I recently this year just went on my first Wyoming muley hunt, and was pleasantly surprised myself. Me and my buddy killed two nice four points with cheaters. I am in love with Wyoming.

Great bull and completely agree on your strategy. I am always baffled by people that have a ton of points in states like Utah or AZ and have never hunted elk before just waiting to "cash them in." Good on you for hunting every year. Its a good way to do it!!

Man that's awesome reading threads like this. I'm just starting to look at Wyoming, my two older sons moved to Cheyenne earlier this year and one will be headed to Laramie next summer, so I really need to be focusing on Wyoming. This year we hunted way North in Colorado and it was great but I'd like to focus more on Wyoming as the boys are better off hunting there as residents next year.

I think more and more guys are leaning towards less point building and hunting more often. The only trade of is, a person won’t be successful every year and you likely won’t be killing giants, but.....who really cares, at least your out in the hills!
