Need to make the muzzy UT legal. For someone that is willing to take the time to practice, which sighting system would you recommend if you’re trying to stretch the shooting distance?

I didn’t really want it, but a 1x Sightron muzzleloader scope fell into my lap and it’s super clear - I haven’t shot any groups with it vs peep sight yet, but the scope will definitely have the upper hand.

Before they went to allowing us to have magnified scopes for that few years, I had hunted with a williams peep sight for years and years (15 years +). Initially, I tried a good quality 1x scope, but the crosshairs covered so much of the target area at 100 yards, it was difficult to shoot precisely, at the range. Hunting, it wasn't as big of a deal, but it was tough at the range. I sold that scope after one season.

The peep sight allowed me to put the post at a "6 o'clock" hold on the target and my precision went way up. I shot often to 200 yards, but 150 yards and in, I was money. I did kill my biggest buck to date at 161 yards with that sight set up. And shot several from 85-135 yards over those years.

Last year, I put the peep sight back on and was shocked at how bad my eyesight had gotten. It was a lot harder than I remembered. I didn't have a ML tag last year, rather just switched in anticipation to hunting with my MLs in the upcoming years. I doubt it was any worse than shooting my 1x Burris back in the day, but it was not as clear and easy as I remembered it being.

This year I am trying a clarifying lens in my peep sight to see if it helps. I will report back after trying it. It arrives in a few days. I drew a LE mule deer tag for one of the general areas special Late Season. Could be great. Excited to give it a shot. If it doesn't work, I may try a red dot as well if I can get one with a small enough dot.

Did you have a chance to try the clarifying lense? Which one did you order?

Yes I received the Specialty Archery lenses and peep housings. I have installed the #5 and #6 lenses. Both will work, with the edge going to #6 for me. Initial impressions are that this is going to work great. But haven't been to the range yet to test things, just looking through things in the yard etc.

Thanks for the feedback. They fit inside a Williams peep sight?

As I get older iron or peep sights are getting harder to use. I would get a 1x scope if possible. Preferably with a duplex style reticle. Red dot would be my second choice. Not all red dots are the same though, i have looked through a few with horrible light transmission

Same question the OP asked - do the Specialty Archery clarifiers thread in a Williams peep? Or are you using a different peep?

I researched this a year ago, but the info I found then was that the threads were different and it wouldn’t work. If you’ve found the solution, I’d be interested in the details on the parts you’re using.

You can watch my YouTube vids breaking clays at 300 with peeps to see what is possible.

A scope is certainly faster if you get one with enough travel. Both are more capable than you will believe. The sightron muzzleloader scope is the cheapest way to get decent quality. Decent peep setups will have you in deeper and quality peeps will cost you a lot.

When it comes to shooting deer (brown item) against a natural backdrop ground, do you prefer a scope or peep sight setup?

Scopes are going to be better contrast. I like the peeps for the limiting factor. I'm less worried about killing them than hunting them.....for pure killing efficiency, scopes absolutely win.

Threaded right into my Williams peeps. No problem at all.

My old eyes say a good 1x scope or red dot.

Love a good peep sight and in the right hands they can be as accurate as a red dot. But if you wear readers, you'll struggle with it.

I wear glasses to improve my distance vision, close vision isn’t currently a problem

Sightron 1X for the win. I have used on a couple hunts n UT on my muzzy. I bought mine at the Salt Lake City Sportsmans Warehouse close to 10 years and don’t think Sightron make them any longer. When looking for a 1x scope to be UT compliant I looked at every brand and found the Sightron to have the least tunnel effect.

Ive not looked through a 1x scope, but I remember hearing Remi Warren say it made the deer seem smaller and he did not like it...Found that interesting.

Also the Iron-I peep housing WITH a verifier lens is not colorado compliant according to the GW I asked.

I looked all last year for a Sightron and couldnt find one. Ended up with a Traditions that works well enough. It also has an outer circle that can help with holding over once you figure out the range.
