I just picked up a CVA Scout in .44 Magnum. Going to have the barrel cut to 16 inches
Let me know how that 16” barrel does. I’ve got a cva scout take down in 44 mag and I really like it. It’s a thumper.

The Ruger M77 compact is a stellar 16” gun for deer. Top it with a LPVO 1-6 or 1-8 and it’s a very handy rifle anywhere.

Another vote for .223. 1:8 twist Tikka and chop to 16” and go kill.

Looking to build another 16" deer gun just because i have the itch but cant pick a caliber.

I have one in .308 so thats out. This will be shot supressed, all it needs to do is drop deer under 300 yards. I might target shoot every now and then but this will be used on deer 90% of the time.
If you haven't built one yet, I'd suggest a 7mm-08 Remington or 338 Federal since you already ruled out a .308 that would be perfect for this.

6.5grendel. Made to be shoot out of shorter barrel. Shoots flat enough to 300 Yards. Minimal recoil. good bullet selection. I’ll likely order one for my encore this year.

I sure will. I'm debating on either a scope or a Holosun green dot on it.
I started with a Vortex Diamondback BDC on 350 Legend and the zero shifted (nice & uncluttered BDC), not liking that. Gonna try it on 357 Mag and see if it will hold zero there.

Got a Burris Fulfield BDC to replace it. Have not shot it yet.

That 44 mag is good to push 150-200 yards if you want it to. Was a popular round in New England when I was up there in years past.

I bought a 1 minute red dot and had it on a rifle - had trouble finding the dot in regular light. I'd prefer a 2.5 minute dot if doing that again. 5 minute dot if an inside 100 yard gun. Old age...

16” 30-30 lever gun. Winchester and Marlin both made ”Trapper“ models. One of the handiest rifles I’ve ever hunted with.

The 6mm Arc and 6mm creedmore are really putting out some impressive numbers with thier long heavy for caliber bullets. Along with all the factory ammo that's available, its a no brainer. A 16" barrel is going to "hurt" velocity compared to what the box says but that makes it almost perfect for shooting those factory loaded soft match bullets. Darn near almost puts them at the perfect velocity to not grenade and expand reliable. Cough, cough, eld-m....

I think the 14 deer I've shot with a 45-70 would disagree, but maybe.
I saw 45-70 mentioned, but I wouldn't consider it for a 300yd gun.
The newer guys need to justify their gun choices. Sure you can kill a deer with xyz, but does it KILL the deer or wound it til it dies like an arrow or large bore pellet rifle?

Just modified my Marlin 338 MX. Barrel is 16 1/4” long, installed XS Rear sight and rail, installed a Ruger SBL fiber optic front sight, and a Beartooth Merchantile oversized lever.

I have the CVA Scout in 444 Marlin, 45-70, 300 BO and 6.5 CM. The 6.5 CM is at the smith right now getting cut to 16” and threaded. Those Scout are great rifles. With that being said I also have a Tikka T3x 7mm-08 that’s cut down to 16.5”. I also have 3 more guns at the smith as well being cut and threaded. Another 6.5 CM 16”, 30-06 16” and 300 18”.
