….

Lots of poo pooing Texans lately. I really hope this little cross section of individuals is not how you have decided to view all Texans. If so, you're no better than they are. There are idiots everywhere, including where you live. We have more than our fair share here, I know. Unfortunately, we continue to get more idiots from liberal states that enjoy our economy, so it will only get worse.

Hunting in the west is so much easier than out here. If you've never lived here then you have no idea how lucky you have it in places with lots of public land. That's not so say it can't be done here, its just more difficult. I've been lucky to have property or friends with land to hunt on. But most Texans don't know what real hunting is like, because "real" hunting is not the same here. Blinds, feeders and pallets of corn or the norm here, but that's just the way it is. Consider yourself lucky if you have tons of public land outside your back door. As for me...I'll continue to make the drive west until I can convince the Mrs. to move.

Texas isn’t any different than a lot of States out east that don’t have a ton of public land.

The difference is most hunters in eastern states can all agree that we would be better off with more public hunting opportunities and we should be careful not to lose what we still have.

Some Texans, unfortunately, seem to want to just double down the whole “Texas is the best!” mantra to the point of looking like a fool when someone points out they aren’t the best state in the world for hunting due to the lack of public access.

That in turn makes Texas, and Texans an easy target.

I really do think that's the cultural aspect at play, I don't think it matters at all what the issue is but it's the way it's always been done in Texas so it's the right way because the Texas Way is the Right Way.

I agree that we aren't any different than eastern states regarding lack of public land.

Texans also agree that we'd be better off with public hunting, but like I said you can't go off of a VERY small cross section of people. Especially the tools on the site you linked. That simply isn't the norm, and I don't think you believe that either.

We always seem to get the "We're the best" thing thrown at us. Texans are proud of the state...so what? Everyone should be proud of where they come from. I have lived my entire life in TX, outside of the service, and have never felt this mystic superiority complex all non-Texans seem to see. Truth be told, outside of east TX and the hill country, most of the state is pretty boring, at least from a topography standpoint. We have way too many people here and not enough roads. People use to wave at each other as you'd drive by, but that rarely happens anymore. I knew all my neighbors growing up, but hardly know any of them where we live now. We're not perfect and we know it, but listening to comments like some of the ones above just prove we all have issues.

As far as that thread making Texas an easy target, well I guess you could find something on just about any state that highlights the jackwagons.

ETA: anyone that states TX is the best state for public hunting is an obvious idiot. That really should just be understood. I would imagine most of those posters are still living at home and not contributing to society.

It's Texas, you'll never meet a nicer bunch of assholes.

Care to expound on that statement? Have you lived here or had much first hand experience? Not sure how we pissed you off, but on behalf of the entire state of Texas, I apologize.

Lived in College Station for 3 years.

Nobody pissed me off, just how I would describe a typical Texan. There is a superiority complex there, along with misplaced pride. The natives don't see it for the most part because, " why would I ever leave Texas" is the most common response you will get to the question of have you ever been anywhere north of the Red river.

Like anywhere you go people and culture are different. Ever spent any time on the East Coast? Would you describe the typical New Yorker as warm, inviting, patient and friendly?

Ha, I actually just looked it up and all I saw was a picture of Bill de Blasio and Andrew Cuomo making out! Come on Trial, you can't throw stones in glass houses!
Thanks my father lives in north texas for 30 years. I own property in north texas also. Him and I also own property together in south central texas. I been spending time down there since I was since I was 13 ...so 30 of my my 43 years. Hell I have more time in Texas then a lot of " Texans"
That place is a train wreck when it comes to ecology, conservation and the environment.

Why did you come all the way from SD to TX to go to vet school? Could it be because we are one of the best??? It's okay, you can admit it.

Seriously though, I doubt that in three years, in Bryan/College Station of all places, you made us all out to be assholes.

I am not a NY fan by any stretch of the imagination. However from a public land stand point NY is way better then most of the county. We have almost 5 million acres of public land. That's not counting NYC DEP property that is covered under the watershed agreement and that is open to public acess for hunting, fishing and hiking in perpetuity.

My dads property in south Texas had animals from Africa and Asia on it with no idea where they have come from. Think about that for minute.

All the underhanded slights do nothing but reinforce what I experienced for three years.

Huh, had no idea you had ties here. North TX is a great place to own property, especially if you have the minerals. The barnett shale deposited a lot of cash in land owners accounts when they were paying those big sign on bonuses.

I agree that we have some of our own issues regarding the environment. Water and air being up there for sure.

You're joking, right? So its ok to come on here and call me an asshole, but if I defend myself then I'm perpetuating the problem and proving you right?? You need a better sense of humor. The comment about A&M was a joke, as noted by the emoji. BTW, I have family there and grew up going to bonfires and yell practice, so I love that place. I highly doubt your stay in CS was that bad. No place is perfect, but you can't start throwing insults and then spin it when I respectfully defend myself. Sheesh

Yea we missed that pitch. However all our property was and is still centered in Collin county, so we hit another one.

There some special people at that site, I frequent it myself. I couldn’t find that specific post or who wrote it but I’m guessing it was a troll and shouldn’t be taken seriously.

I've been posting on that site a LONG time. It leans very libertarian, as do I. Unfortunately, the libertarian/conservative side of the house for some reason has taken a very hard anti public lands turn in the last few years.

That said, I enjoy debating the issue on that site. Most of them are just parroting what they heard, haven't researched the issue, and have no idea what public lands offer. Not only to the hunter, but to the recreational shooter, hiker, four wheeler, etc etc. Sure, some double down on stupid like we saw in that thread. But a few watching on the sidelines get their eyes opened up to the truth.

We need to educate people on public lands. It shouldn't be a partisan issue. If there is one thing most people should be able to agree on, it's that protecting places we can enjoy outdoor activities (hunting, shooting, hiking, camping, 4wheeling, etc) is good for folks on BOTH sides of the isle.

I used to be super libertarian and parroted the anti-public land line too, and once I thought more about it and realized the reality of the situation it really changed things in my mind.

I still lean more libertarian than not but I've had to divorce myself from it as an ideology, now my main ideology is being against all ideology. :ROFLMAO:

Sure I'd love for a private entity like the RMEF to own all the public land in the US and manage it properly and let us play on it for free but that's simply not practical.

Separate from federal land, in Texas, there is "state" land. BUT, the state does not own all of it. In many cases the state leases surface rights - hunting access - from private land owners to provide public hunting land. If the state or the hunters upset the owners than the state may find its pool of "state" land drying up.
