Need some help from folks that load 150 & 162 gr. ELD-X in 7mm-08. Doing some analysis on bullet dimensions, and the nearest store that carries them is a 4 hour round trip away from me.

Would you mind taking a few measurements of each...boat tail length, bearing surface length, base to ogive length. Similar to how Berger shares those dimensions for their bullets. Trying to get a sense of how much freebore is needed to seat the beginning of the bearing surface at the neck-should junction.

Thanks!

I load the 150 in 3 Tikka 7mm-08s over Big Game. No direction on jump, two rifles like kissing the lands, one likes a jump.

I tried the 162 but couldn’t get the velocity I wanted.

is this for a tikka, by chance? If so, the 150 eldx will seat with the bearing surface at the neck/shpulder junction and be around .030 off the lands. This is as a long (med) action.

Yep...I had a donor Tikka action sitting around from a 270 WSM I picked up a while back that I'm building one on. The reamer my smith has is SAAMI spec, which shows .191 from case mouth to ogive...and when I did all the math based on the 150 measurements, looks like it about .040 into the case w/ no room for jump.

Based on the .730 BTO, .210 BT Length, and .284 Case Neck...math says I need ~.240 (Case Mouth to Ogive) plus room to jump. I was planning on telling my gunsmith .300 to be able to run both / give some room for error.

150 OAL: 1.397”
Bearing surface looks like .483”
BTO: .728”
Boat tail looks like .218”
You were super close... .445 bearing surface, .205 BT length, from Hornady. Oddly enough, they didn't have a spec on BTO. But that is probably the easiest to accurately measure at home. Thought you'd want to know how good your caliper skills are. 😉

Mind checking my math though? From SAAMI spec sheets, I see the freebore is .119 and case mouth to ogive is .191.

Based on the 150 (changed my mind about the 162, MV is just too low), .730 BTO, subtracting out the BT length (.205) and neck (.284), that gives me .241 case mouth to ogive (.050 longer than SAAMI). Plus .030 for bullet jump...and I'm at .270 need for the 150 eld-x, case mouth to ogive (or .080 over SAAMI).

Appreciate the second set of eyes on this... And for taking the time to get those measurements too.
