115 DTacs on deer

I've listen to a couple podcasts where guys said they thought the DTacs didn't expand like they'd hoped on deer. Anyone have some experience with this? But did really well on elk. But they also had a dead deer.

Planning on shooting the DTac but I'm also partial to Bergers.

Mainly setting the new UM up for elk. But it will definitely be used for deer mainly.

DTACs are not designed for reliable expansion on game. I would choose a Barnes 95gr LRX (for longer ranges) or a 80gr TTSX for short to medium range.

A std DTAC or a DTAC with a nose ring cut or with a deep nose ring cut? Might make a difference. Tubb and others certainly advocate for it's use on game with the nose rings cuts. The 6 UM thread has a lot of discussion about that bullet. Might want to look it up.

I’ve shot a few deer with nose ringed DTACs, without issue. Attached a few pictures of one at 2500fps impact velocity, deer went about 10 yards.

This is pretty standard performance in a deer from what I’ve seen on a double lung shot: bullet diameter entrance, some onside lung damage, moderate damage to the heart, massive damage to offside lung and exit.

I think if you keep your impact velocity high then you’re ok. I assume your building a 6UM so that won’t be an issue.

Only thing I've read is the DTAC out of the 6 Creed can be less than ideal on deer sized game. I think it was Form that mentioned it. When talking with Avery at the Hunt Expo, his recommendation was the nose ringed DTAc out of the Creedmoor was much better for elk.

I've been shooting the deep cut version out of a 6 UM, and have been surprised at the fast upsets and wide wound channels vs what I was told to expect. Maybe it's the deep cut, maybe it's the high impact velocities. But what I've seen from 2300 fps impact up to 3000 has been excellent for deer sized game.

Do they still kill well most of the time? So far, yes.

Let em fly at the deer and watch them die. Especially at 2,000 FPS impact and above.

Yeah if I'm correct on the speed of that UM that's out to a grand... well past my capabilities.

I haven't seen any issue with the thin-skinned game, axis deer being the smallest animal I have shot.

The specific concern is they have longer neck length than a ELD or TMK. The smaller the animal, the further through the vitals the neck will go. I.E. there's potential to get through a lung before a bullet disrupts. The same critique applies to bergers although I dont recall a direct neck length comparison of nose ring DTACs to bergers.

I'm hesitant on the 115s on deer out of a creedmoor. I think I'm going to try the 112s this year. That could be another option for you.
