110gr Barnes TTSX in 308

Smoked this MONDO boar with the 110TTSX which is a flat base actually. It’s running 3062fps out of my 16.5” Ruger m77 Mk2 308 compact. Have it sighted in 2” high at 100 gives me a mpbr 0-280 yards. This boar was 262 yards broadside. Crazy thing is the shot placement was a little further back than I wanted but it knocked the boar on its ass. I thought it dropped DRT but got back up and ran 20 yards and died. Clipped back lung and blew up the liver. Absolutely mind blowing as the 110 isn’t talked about as much as the 130 is. This pig weighed 278 on the scale. A solid boar to test any bullet on. Extremely impressed. Unfortunately the bullet passed all the way through so I couldn’t look at the mushroom but whatever it did it’s job right. Entrance was the photo with the truck in the background. Exit was the other.

Reviving this older thread to get any other experiences folks have with the .308 ttsx 110gr, 130gr or the TAC-TX 120gr. I see barnes is now offering loaded .308win in 130gr at 3100fps and a “reduced recoil” load at 110gr at 2900 so curious on folks experiences especially with regard to the actual conservative velocity floor you’ve found with each bullet. Im thinking about these for a .308 win and looking at the tactx as well. Curious if anyone has tried those in a little faster cartridge such as a 308win and what you found.

I think that video I posted speaks volumes with how good a light bullet in 308 can be. Knocking down a 250+ pound pig on its ass from a liver/lung shot with zero spinal trauma is nothing to scoff at. I’ll test the 130 next but I think that’s the ideal weight to stay at. Keep in mind my velocity floors for the 110 and 130 were coming out of a 16” barrel.

My load is 110gr TTSX in a 308 Win using 47.6gr of Accurate 2230. That gives me about 3,050 feet per second and a nice fairly reduced recoil.

This is a stellar deer and medium game load.

@Ruggedsportsman thanks. I saw that and it looks great. Was wondering if you have further terminal experience with lower impact velocities that might suggest where the limits of that combo are, ie what your experience is with lowest acceptable impact velocity in reality. @IAm_Not_Lost do you have a sense of impact velocity and what youve seen at the lower end of velocity spectrum?

Above 2,000fps out to 400 yards. That’s my cut off. Barnes bullets expand great at that velocity.

Asking because I’m curious if that is based on experience or general rule of thumb. I’ve used a bunch of Barnes bullets, and find that specific bullets behave quite differently, so I’m just curious about your experiences with this particular one. Example 150gr vs 168gr .308 diameter have different velocity thesholds. These extremely light bullets slow down very quickly, so I’m really not interested in muzzle velocity, I’m interested in people’s experience with impact velocity.
I’m not necessarily reloading these, so I’m looking at the Barnes factory loads. Their 110 grain load is a “reduced recoil” version, and guesstimating out of my 18 inch barrel that’s going to be in the neighborhood of 2750 fps muzzle. So this would have me at 2000 ft./s by 200 yards, so it’s actually reasonably likely I would be pushing the velocity envelope. I’m curious if you guys have actually shot stuff very close to 2000 fps impact velocity, and what type of terminal performance you got?

My impact velocity for that shot was 2173fps. 320 yards is where that load hits 2000fps. I dont think there would be much if at all a difference had that shot been an extra 80 yards. I have that rifle setup to point and shoot anything within 300 yards but know the holdover for 350 yards(top of back). I know people like to keep lead free bullets above 2k fps but from what I've seen I would be fine with anything over 1800fps.

OP: Was this the factory Barnes VOR-TX 110 grain ammo? Thanks in advance.

This is from an email that I received after asking about effective range for the 130’s

“An impact velocity of 1800 fps will get you about 1.7x expansion of the bullet’s original diameter. If 2x expansion is desired then add approximately 100-200 fps. Let's make your minimum 2000 fps for impact velocity.

I'm computing your MV at approximately 2916 fps for the 46.5 gr charge of Varget. Add 5.47 fps per .1 grain of powder if you wish to use a heavier powder charge. On a 32 deg Fall morning at sea level you'd still be good to 350 yards.

Thank You

Barnes Bullets”

I now shoot the 130’s (handloads) out of my T3X with a 20” barrel.
My MV is approximately 3178 fps using TAC because I couldn’t get Varget to be consistent.
So with the TAC recipe I’m probably able to shoot further than 350 according to what Alan Griffith has suggested.
Took a nice Buck at 270 yards and was DRT.

Awesome info. I‘ll be switching to the 130s as well after I used up the last 110s I made. N135 is undoubtedly the best powder for that combo if you have it.

Black Hills is also loading the 110gr TTSX in 7.62. 3,000 FPS from a 16" barrel. It comes in their mil pack cans, 240 rounds per can.
