I am very excited to be hunting Utah again. I was fortunate enough to draw the late rifle elk bull tag for this November.
Before moving to Oregon when I lived in Las Vegas we would travel to southern and central Utah hunting general deer. I always loved the state and was able to take a few archery mule deer as well. Have some great memories with my dad on those hunts.
If anyone would like to share their stories or pics of bulls they have taken in the Cache that would get the heart pumping.
Thanks
Bob

That time of year they'll be on the private ground in the unit. Do you know any landowners there?

My dad had this tag last year and we put a lot into it with little to show for it. There are bulls in there, apparently, but we struggled to find them. UNTIL it snowed. Then they popped out all over the place. We ended up with a 4-point (taken out of a herd of five 4-5 points). Never did see a big bull or know of anyone killing anything bigger than a 5-point. Everybody had stories of big bulls being in there (from the early season) but they seem far and few between enough to not be worth the points it takes to draw this tag, IMO. But if it snows you might be in great shape. Just make sure you can get around. We did fine with a 4x4 truck, but most everybody else had Rinos. We mostly hunted an area that I think was called Elk Valley? Also went on the SE side of the unit for a few days and saw nothing. It can be a desolate hunt. We covered A LOT of country, too.

That is a bummer to hear. I guess we will hope for the best.
Thank you for sharing.

Are we talking about the same unit east of Logan? I don't remember private property being an issue at all. There is a wildlife refuge you can't hunt, but there were very few elk on it and no big bulls.

I wish I could help but dont know much about the unit other than it can is tough to find a good bull. There have been a few killed over the years so they are around somewhere. Best of luck and would be interested to see some pictures from your hunt.

The guys I know with that tag hunt private ground and kill good bulls. Public areas are always a crap shoot even with an LE tag

Here's my dads bull from there a few years ago. 375"

Overall was not really a good hunt. Very little action during the archery season.

My neighbor had this tag a couple years ago. Hired an outfitter and had some good chances on nice bulls but was never able to connect.

Do you recall what outfitter he used? From my experience, this unit doesn’t get a lot of outfitters. Also interested to know some of his major struggles that prevented him from connecting.

That’s a great bull! What was his strategy... spot and stalk, blind, tree stand, calling?

I called it in for him. Took me 2+ hours of dogging him until he finally decided to come fight me.

Entire story was in Western Hunter a while back.
