0 degree sleeping bag

New year and getting ready for 2026 elk hunt. I'm looking for some new or new to me gear. Any recommendations on a good bag that won't break the bank. Also will be adding a good day pack. I'm a flatlander and my gear is used mostly for Texas whitetails.

I highly recommend western mountaineering. I know they are expensive but they're well worth it. I have the kodiak and used it down to 14 degrees this season and stayed nice and warm.

A zero degree bag is a lot of bag. You might consider a lesser bag combined with a quilt to give you the warmth needed but have less to carry for less severe weather.

What price do you consider to be breaking the bank?

My favorite "bag" is the EE Conundrum quilt. It's labeled a quilt, but it has a closed foot box and zipper that runs about 3/4 the length. When it's zipped up, it's a bag, but you can open the zipper and run it as a quilt. EE has frequent sales that will get you around $450 for a quilt.

I use a Nemo 0 degree bag. It's pretty awesome. The inflatable sleeping pads are great but I don't use them anymore. I started taking a foldable foam sleeping pad and I put it in my pack when hunting to use as a glassing pad. Also great to put your feet on while glassing and it keeps them pretty warm. I think its a Nemo switchback pad. The bag is a Nemo Sonic 0 degree.
Daypack... I used Kifaru and Initial Ascent for multiple days... but the eberlestock Team Elk bag is pretty awesome with the rifle scabbard built in.

Unless you sleep terribly cold I would consider a 15 degree bag. They are kind of the "sweet spot" for a all around bag for fall weather anywhere in North America.

I bought a Kelty cosmic down on a fire sale. It was cheap, but I have always stayed warm in it and never felt like I needed to buy a different bag.

I have several other items on my gear list that I'm going to have to pick up. This will probably be a one-time a year use so I don't plan on spending over $250. I may be sacrificing comfort for price point. I'm hoping to find a used bag for this trip.

I definitely wouldn't be rockin' a zero degree bag for that. 15 or 20 and if you get some sort of rogue low temps you can sleep in extra layers. If temps are in the 20s-40s like id expect, you're going to sweat your nuts off in a zero degree

Saw that its a guided hunt. If weight isn't an issue, id take a look at a Wiggys 20 degree...I love mine, it gets the nod anytime I'm not carrying camp on my back

I'm a retired US Army vet. I still have 2 of my issue old green "fart sacks." These have done me great on a few DIY Colorado hunts and many South Texas trips. I'd use one of these but they are pretty bulky and looking to upgrade. The Outfitter sent a recommended gear list but could be it's the same list sent for all seasons.

I use a true 30 deg bag (30 comfort….closer to an advertised 20deg) and a 50deg quilt. The “modularity” of it pretty useful for weight saving.

With both I’ve gotten down close to zero and been warm. Bag is 22oz. Quilt is 10oz. Total
Down is close to 22oz or so. But with it being two layers there’s a bit of extra air layer/loft so it “may” be even warmer.

Also important is a high value sleeping pad. I use 4-7 ish and it works great.

REI Magma 15. Goes on sale twice a year in May and in September for 25% off. Right around $300. Comes in three lengths and three widths ,so a size to fit anyone almost. I bought and used one last year, they are a great bag with 800 water proof down and amazing loft.

I use a Sierra Design 0 deg down bag. Ive used it in single digits with a liner, i was comfortable in my unders.
