Then you need to read Rokslide Prostaffer Jared Bloomgren's latest article. Jared has killed some great bulls with archery equipment. His home state of South Dakota doesn't have much for elk opportunity, so he's mastered the process of researching elk areas hundreds of miles from home, and even more important, how to hunt the elk once he gets there. Good stuff. Huge bull at the bottom and nice rig as well. I need a camper, leaving my ice chest in the back of my truck for 8 days with a few valuables inside of it adds a little undue nervousness. Its one of the things I would have never thought I needed until I started hunting out west.
 
Thanks for checking out my recent article guys! Thanks for the comments as well! Having a topper on my hunting rig is a must as I use it to sleep in many nights a year while hunting as well as keeping my valuables safe and locked up when needed!

Great article. Last year was the first year I planned everything myself from unit to hunting style. One thing I'd add for those eastern guys like myself is don't get "analysis paralysis" ...where you let all the details consume you and make it more difficult than it should be or worse don't go at all. Pick a spot, buy your tag, then you can sort eveything out.

I also agree with Jared that it is extremely rewarding in the end.

Arbutusbucks, you're so right. In my scouting business, I get calls all the time, even from customers who've contracted with us, and they are so hung up on the details, they can't trust the research and just go hunting.
 
Arbutusbucks, I have been in that same case in the past! Come to think of it...I almost didn't go on a hunt because of it! Weed through it and you will be fine and experience great things!
 
Great article! My hunting partner and I are headed west this September to chase elk for the first time. It's something I've been planning for a couple years now and it's all coming together. Still deciding on a unit but we have time. It is a daunting task though! Hunting an animal that you have zero experience with and in a place you've never been is a little overwhelming. Actually figuring out the exact trailhead we'll find ourselves at after a 20 something hour drive seems crazy to think about. We'll figure it out though.
