Thanks for the input everyone.
One last question on seating depth. Seating the bullet in further will ultimately increase the pressure, as there is less cartridge capacity.
Since I’m already at near max, any chance I will run into pressure signs with the new seating depth?
@Wolfshead and @Dougfir thanks for the info. I happened to go to the range last Friday with a couple of loads right around the 9.5 batch. I played around with 0.2 grain increments and ended with good numbers at 46.4 grains of Varget.
Batch 9.5 for Reference

I’ve had a couple of people recommend tbe 750 taper less barrel. This seem heavy though for a hunting rifle? They’re listed around 5 lbs compared a #2 or #3 contour weighing in at 2.5-3 lbs.
Am I off base on the weight? Maybe the 20” barrel cuts off enough that’s it’s not as heavy?
Really great information, thank you both very much! Certainly gives me a lot to think about!
I think I’m still leaning towards the .280 AI since it’s been on my radar to build for quite some time. But the 9.3 might be the second rifle I build now given its performance!
Thanks 112savage.
Do you notice an appreciable difference in velocity between your 22” and 24” barreled .280 AIs? I like the handiness of a 22” barrel but read a lot of people recommending a minimum of 24” for velocity. Several recommend 26” but I’m not dragging that through the mountains lol.
Certainly a trend towards the 9.3x62. I considered going that route for awhile until I realized I can buy a factory Tikka chambered in it. Granted it’s only offered in a 20” barrel.
Maybe I need to reconsider it as an option though. It is an impressive cartridge. Is 20” enough barrel or do you...
Thanks everyone for all of the great feedback!
It sounds like I need to look into an aftermarket bottom metal for increased COAL if I want to shoot the long heavies.
For bullet selection, I’d like to be able to load 160-175gr Accubonds or the 145-160gr LRX monometals.
Thanks for the input everyone. I was leaning towards the .280 AI but this certainly helps solidify the decision making process.
Any input on barrel contour and twist rates? I am looking at McGowen #2 and #3 contour. Not sure if the ultra lightweight #1 is too pencil thin?
1:8 twist?
Hi everyone,
I picked up a Tikka T3 in .308 Win today for a price I couldn’t pass up. I plan on using it as a donor action and rebarreling it. I’m going to swap out the short action bolt stop for a long action but am trying to figure out which caliber to chamber the rifle in.
Currently I’m...
Great velocities! I have similar speeds with the 7 mag. Ramshot can really produce some high numbers.
I agree with your approach around the 77.5 and 78.5 gr area. Are all of your groups at 100 yards?
I had to dig through my notes from last year. I started load development but am still dialing it in. I loaded two groups of 6, all items identical except the primers. One group using CCI250, the other using WLRM. All bullets seated 0.055” off the lands.
CCI250 Produced:
Avg Velocity 3213 fps...
Interested to hear more on this topic. Let us know how your hand loads turn out.
I’ve been working up loads in my 7mm Rem Mag with Barnes 145 LRX and RS Grand. My Tikka measures awesome velocities with it. Averaging 3210 fps and nowhere near published max.
Thanks for the info. The two areas I was going to start with are powder and seating depth. I was thinking about starting with .25gr increments to see if I can iron out a node, but maybe it’s better to start with seating depth keeping everything else equal.
That’s a hell of a set up in the...
Good evening everyone,
I finally had a chance to hit the range and wanted to follow up with my findings.
My rifle didn’t seem to like the 168 TTSX’s so I’ll stick with the 150 TTSX’s, particularly my best three batches (five in total). All batches are four shot groups at 200 yards. Bullets...
Ha! That’s funny!
I looked up the serial number on my R77 a few years back and I think it’s from the ‘70s. It’s a cool rifle, I like it a lot.
I found some 155gr Terminal Ascent online. Debating picking them up. Does <160gr seem lite for elk?
I have a range day scheduled for next weekend to...
Thank you both.
Sounds like I need to look into some Accubonds. I’ve heard good things about R22 but was having trouble finding it in stock when I started reloading a year ago.
Any noticeable performance between the Accubond and Swift?
Good evening all,
FNG here. I am working up some hand loads for an old Ruger 77 tang safety in 7mm Rem Mag and interested in bullet selection for deer and elk hunting.
I picked up a box of 160gr Partitions but have always been interested in something in the 175gr weight class. I’d like to push...
Thanks everyone for the help and replies! I’ll start with the Varget and Barnes I have in stock and report back on velocities. If I’m not getting what I want I’ll look at the 180 AB or PTs as an alternative. Thanks again everyone and I’ll report back soon.
