I don’t have experience with all the suggestions. Razor UHDs are very nice. One I’d add is the Tracts. To be fair, I’ve never looked through a set of their binos however I own and have looked through their scopes and they are well above their price point. If I was shopping for binos, Tracts...
What’s your degree in? I’ve been recruiting and hiring people here (Idaho) for 20 years. I know the lay of the land fairly well, and your chosen profession will dictate some of where you can find good jobs.
I’d love a 280ai. I think it hits the sweet spot for standard length, standard bolt face rifle.
My hangup is I have a 708 and a 270, and there’s just not enough difference to justify it.
The 270 with some of the newer, fairly heavy bullets, is hard to beat and very similar to the 280.
My 708...
You’ve already got some good info, one more thing to consider. You can buy a target Accutrigger spring and it’ll get you to where you can get the overall pull weight down to near a pound. I think I purchased mine at gun shack, and I think there’s other places that sell them. If I remember it...
I’m using the Burris ballistic plex, and their E1 should be fine too. I do the math (after knowing my loads speed) so that the bottom post is 600 yards.
Regarding socks, quality is a must. I pack one more pair than the days of my trip. More than once it’s been good to have an extra when I or another on the trip accidentally slipped into the drink! The exception to this is if I’ll have time to wash n dry a pair… which does happen in longer trips...
Hey, let us know how you feel about that Maven scope once you’re done with your hunting season. Nothing wrong with keeping the 308. The biggest problem with the 308 is it’s not “cool” anymore. I tried selling one recently, and nobody would bite.
My most recent was 12g, pheasant load at ~25 yards!
They’re not hard to kill… hitting them is key. I’ve got a pile of 52gr Amax that work fine and are quite accurate in my rifle.
I’m in camp of no need to spend 3k on a rifle. Tikka is a good one. I’d add the howa/vanguard paternal twins are great options too. There’s some good options out there and you won’t have to get a different stock. In howa the Newberg gen 2 or HS are appealing. In weatherby they’ve got some solid...
I’d go eldx or any nosier offering. The 120bt is actually a tough bullet, and many have taken elk with it. The only elk I’ve taken in the 7MM08 was with a 139btsp (yeah I know, boring, but it did the job)
C’ mon Pharm! Me, several mule deer (my longest shot with the 7-08 was a mature buck at 475. Bullet broke a rib, bounced off the bottom of his spine and exited). One young elk calf on a depredation hunt, and several not-so-bright coyotes and jack rabbits, when opportunity presented itself.
Hi, I know this is a bit old. I’m wondering what the OP decided to buy, also any recent recommendations or changes in recommendations regarding new options in 2024?
Thanks!
