"Slower moving" would generally be a bullet with solid construction (non-expandible), relative to a faster moving, lighter, expanding-type projectile. Given two bullets with similar construction (i.e. non-expanding solids), a heavier, slower moving bullet penetrates more deeply and truer than a...
Great article! I'm personally a fan of the 300wsm, particularly when used with lighter for caliber bullets, like the 150s and 165s. Obviously not ideal for the long range crowd, but for the general hunting crowd it's going to equal, if not better, the 300wm. Get much heavier and you start eating...
The Tikka is an amazingly lightweight rifle that doesn't feel like a lightweight rifle, unlike the Kimbers. My 270wsm T3 with a limbsaver pad, sling, full mag+one chambered, cheek riser foam/stock wrap, Leupold 3-9 vx1, and steel Warne medium rings weighs almost exactly 8 pounds. I really want...
One thing I didn't see mentioned is that any given fixed power scope that is the same price as any given variable power scope will generally have better quality glass than the variable.
Overall, I'm a fan of lower power scopes, both variable and fixed, for their simplicity, lighter weight, and...
If 6x suits you, then run it. Leupold had their 6x a while back spec-ed with their LR duplex reticle, and I wish I would've bought one. They only come with the regular duplex now as far as I'm aware.
Just FYI for anyone still interested in a lightweight lower power scope... I bought a new Leupold 1.5-4 VX-Freedom AR. Their specs for the "tree" style reticle are MOA, but the clicks are Mils. Extremely annoying.
This is sweet, something I've been pondering doing for a while now. We had a walk in cooler growing up; it aged meat without as much waste as out in the air. How did you set up the thermostat on the fridge?
Slower moving, heavy for caliber projectiles provide the best penetration into the CNS, which is what's required to stop a bear. Get heavy hard cast lead bullets and probably a barrel specific for those bullets.
Awesome info, roosiebull! We plan on trying some of those exact strategies this spring. Have never done it before, but it'll help with the claustrophobia, lol.
