    Desert Muleys or Bighorn?

Trying to figure out if this is desert muley or bighorn track/scat. Both are in the area (AZ). I'm leaning towards bighorn , but am not sure. And that is cattle scat at the very top of the 2nd photo. Quite a few of them in the area too

    New Sevr Hybrid

I've been looking at that one. Any opinion on why it would perform better than the sevr hybrid ? The sevr performed better on Lusks test

Acquiring targets at short range in timber, w/ Range-Finder

Yes, archery. When i have time to "spot up", i definitely range objects in the area i expect the animal to walk in, and dont really have trouble there. Its more on pop-up targets (i.e walking through the woods and spooked something), or if the animal went somewhere unexpected that i'm having a...

Acquiring targets at short range in timber, w/ Range-Finder

I have a Sig Kilo-3k ....love it, but I've noticed that I have a really hard time acquiring targets that i can see fine with my naked eye (say inside of 50 yards) in relatively thick timber/brush. Basically, I'm struggling to get the animal in my field of view with all the trees and branches...

    Issue with new SEVR heads?

I regrettably didn't inspect my hybrids too closely.....but just got a bull elk right in the sweet spot, and got about 3-4" of penetration....no blood, and the elk didnt seem to care after being scared by the sound of the bow and impact. Fortunately got another shot (frontal) that did the job...

    New Sevr Hybrid

Just shot a bull with these ....very disappointed. First shot was perfect location, hit a rib...only got got about 3 inches of penetration, no blood. 285fps, 505gr at 25 yards. He ran about 20 yards, stopped and carried on with his regular business. I caught up with him about 30 minutes...

    2024 Elk Meat Transport Strategy

Thanks for the input! Everyone's feedback has helped me to come to the "just drive" conclusion . To be clear though, I wasn't worried about the meat going bad while I was in the field. I grew up in the area, and still have plenty of friends and family around (i.e if I kill, I'm not trying to...

    2024 Elk Meat Transport Strategy

Seems sound advice. How big of freezer are you talking here for $200 ? Re self processing the meat. That's my plan. My parents live about 30 minutes from the hunt area (trailhead)...so we'll be staging from there, and heading out on 3-6 day backpack hunting missions from there.

    2024 Elk Meat Transport Strategy

Looked at that briefly, but the first quote with hertz was $1400.... just looked with Avis, and it was about $400...which could be attractive. Now there is an option 4!

    2024 Elk Meat Transport Strategy

Lol, excellent point. I don't even know if I can OTC a whitetail b tag anymore anyway (got to check the regs again). I havent hunted Montana since I moved away, almost 20 yrs ago.

RE antlers. I still have family there, so plan on leaving the antlers with them in the near term (if I fly), and shipping/retrieving at a later date

    2024 Elk Meat Transport Strategy

On the way up I would, but I'm also thinking about fatigue from sitting in a car for 20+ hours. Way back I would be solo (he's flying back regardless, he doesn't have a tag...so just helping me out the first week).

    2024 Elk Meat Transport Strategy

IF I drive, I could absolutely do that. But, I'm a 20 hour drive away from my hunt area if I drove straight there, so I'm considering flying to maximize hunt time. Sorry if I wasn't clear...but I'm debating flying vs driving, and if I fly, how to get meat home.

    2024 Elk Meat Transport Strategy

Lots of threads about this over the years, but they seem dated OR focus on something trivial like 50 lbs of meat. I'm looking for the best way to get ~200lbs of bull elk + ~100 lbs of deer meat (1 buck & 1 doe) from MT to AZ . ~14 day long adventure (doorstep to doorstep). Good problem...
