Modifying Tikka stock to a youth RokStok style.

I have found the same lack of surface adhesion between resin & synthetic (plastic) stock material. The rough sanding does give it some ‘tooth’ to bind to, so the rougher / deeper the serrations, the better. I’ve even gone with dremel wheel cuts that leave triangular angled walls to...

Modifying Tikka stock to a youth RokStok style.

Excellent project! Using an existing spare stock as a skeleton for a custom build is such a great project. For anyone wanting to do one- go for it! Not much to loose and you learn so much from the process. A few thoughts- Filler only needs to be rigid enough to support the outer CF shell...

Leupold Alumina Caps on a NF NX8 Scope

After a bit of use, I am happy with the outcome of this little project. After putting the scope wrap back on, it works for my purposes. And yes, I like to Wrap That Rascal. The back cap doesn't lay flat against the scope tube, but it can't. The function of the Alumina is so much better...

Leupold Alumina Caps on a NF NX8 Scope

After a bit of searching to see if anyone had a way to use Alumina scope caps on a NF, I ran across a discussion here on Rokslide - https://rokslide.com/forums/threads/leupold-alumina-covers-on-non-leupold-scopes.260355/ I picked up the 50mm Alumina that threaded right into place and works...

Leupold Alumina covers on non leupold scopes

willisp.72 - That sounds like a really good solution for the front cover if the Alumina does not thread directly on. Luckily the front Alumina cover is a direct thread onto the NF NX8 and works very well. Still playing with the first attempt at making an adapter ring. It fits nice and snug...

Leupold Alumina covers on non leupold scopes

Thought I’d try my hand at forming an adapter ring that would slip onto the outer NF NX8 ocular tube body since there are no exposed threads on the inner scope tube - pretty straightforward. Later I might add a cinch-down section to the outer ring like the Tenebraex adapter has, just need to...

Leupold Alumina covers on non leupold scopes

Hmmm... I do love the Alumina scope caps. Picked up a NF NX8 and the 50mm Alumina threads right into the objective. Definitely a keeper! Problem is the 36mm ocular. Now you've got me thinking. There should be a way... More to follow...

Lightweight Kimber Build with Custom Carbon Fiber Stock

That trigger guard is a great addition. I ran into the issue of needing a trigger guard that was different from the OEM and tried a few different model guards I thought I could modify. None of them worked, so I made a block with the proper inner dimension and built up the CF around it to give...

Lightweight Kimber Build with Custom Carbon Fiber Stock

RPete - Wow - what a build! Your technique improved by an order of magnitude on this second round. I am loving your inlet section build - using CF tube is really good in a lot of ways. It contours nicely to your rifles action and the arc of the tube adds a lot of extra strength. The...

Lightweight Kimber Build with Custom Carbon Fiber Stock

Nice looking foam core to apply the carbon fiber fabric. This one should be really cool to watch come together. As mentioned in other posts, a good vacuum source is a salvaged refrigerator pump. Been using the same one for close to 10 years and it does a really good job for CF bagging. One...

    Custom Carbon Fiber Stock

Well, this thread has planted some invasive thoughts in the old noodle. Once there, they are like a tune that just sticks in the head, an itch that eventually needs to be scratched. Many years ago I inherited a .243 FN Herstal with a fantastic one stage trigger. It has a 24" tapered barrel...

    Custom Carbon Fiber Stock

It really is impressive what can be done with pretty standard tools found in one's garage. RPete did a great job demonstrating this on the first time out! (y) One thing about cutting and shaping CF plate is that you can't really cut it using a shearing action (think drill bit into wood). By...

    Custom Carbon Fiber Stock

Density/weight is close to light-weight bondo body filler, but it has much longer work time and doesn’t stink to high heaven. Durability/toughness is a bit less as it does not have fibers in the mix. The ease of shaping with the longer work time is the key. This is the first time I’ve used it...

    Custom Carbon Fiber Stock

Not to get too far off topic, but took the Carbon Walnut out for some plinking. Here's the toggle bolt in action. It's the other end of the spectrum from bench rest, but sure is fun ;)

    Headlamp!

Doh - Realized the picture of my Zipka mod on the scale was wayyyy off. I left the plastic shield over the scale and it read really light. Actual weight is 2.26oz. Love this setup BTW - keep it in my work pack and use it regularly when I need some hands free light.

    Custom Carbon Fiber Stock

Thanks TP! And the plan all along was to finish it with a clear coat. First thing I've ever done in walnut, so definitely want to see the grain. I do love the toggle action - quick and simple. A bit more progress... Put on a few coats of poly and I think the wood finish looks pretty good...

    Custom Carbon Fiber Stock

The radical forearm cut out left it a bit fragile for adding a bipod mount, so did a CF lining to strengthen the area. After a bit of trimming & sanding, the CF layer is quite stout. In fact, next time will use 2 layers of fabric vs 4. And I really jacked up the weave line of the...

    Custom Carbon Fiber Stock

As we wait for RPete to post a range report (how's that for getting put on the spot), here is a quick summary of another approach for using carbon fiber in a gun stock project. This is just meant to show that you really can do some pretty cool stuff in your garage just using basic tools...

    Custom Carbon Fiber Stock

Well folks- that’s how it’s done! Start off with a bit of insulation foam and sand paper, then resin and CF fabric. Add in a lot of thought and motivation with some other bits along the way. That’s the way to get ’er done- my hat is off to you. (y)

    Headlamp!

So this might be a bit of a kludge, but it does what I want it to do. A new light weight EDC headlight combo I'm trying out. -FenixHM50R Light - 700lm max with red LED too. -Petzl Zipka retractable head cord puck. Came with 2 rechargeable 16340 (3.7v) batteries but will also run off CR123...
