It's not a point system to my understanding but if you've been applying for at least 10 consecutive years you supposedly have better odds to draw. Otherwise I think it's just random.
I have been a few times but not specifically in any of the elk units. It's flat country with a lot of big ag fields. Areas that aren't farmable are typically brushy wet meadows and tree cover is mostly Aspen and smaller bur oaks.
Edit to add, if you're considering it, start applying now. Draw...
For those interested. The current estimate of this herd is 50-60.
Per the legislation: “The DNR may manage the Kittson Central elk herd population to allow for genetic diversification and herd health. The herd may not be allowed to exceed 130% of the estimated 2023 population.”...
Not sure if you ever got the answer to your question, but Hornady load data has a COL of 2.800". Starting charge for AA2520 is 35.2gr and a max charge of 44.0gr. Same as the 180 SST.
I don't have any social media accounts so I'll have to take your word for it. If what you say is true, that is unfortunate. Politics should have no place in biology but unfortunately often does.
My guess would be to attract more hunters. The DNR has hosted public "deer plan" meetings for the last ~5 years and I would assume that they are receiving more support of crossbow use than opposition.
I recently made a similar upgrade (Styrka S5 to Meopta Meopro Air). As someone else said, it can be hard to tell the difference in good lighting but if you compare the two side by side, eventually you will notice why the better glass is worth the money and you won't be able to unsee it again.
Maybe Alberta is different, but in my experiences helping out in Manitoba, they let some fires burn as long as private property or valuable timber isn't threatened.
Edit: typo
I used to work at a golf course and we did this because slinging cooking oil on the turf was easier on the grass than bar oil, at least in theory. It seemed to work fine but we didn't use are saws very hard either.
