Hunting mature thick timber Muleys in Eastern WA, Northern ID, and NW Montana

I’m a Washington resident, this has been my first year taking hunting deer in Washington seriously. I’m usually focused on out of state hunting. I scouted 10 days this year in the terrain you described. I ended up taking a buck, but not my target buck. Definitely very frustrating hunting un...

    Mule Deer over Money

100%, I’ve struggled the last few years in the situation you described. I’m getting better at passing the “decent” looking younger bucks, but definitely not perfect. I agree with you about guy’s shooting what they want, if a forky makes you happy have at it.

    Mule Deer over Money

My last few years of deer hunting I’ve been killing a lot of mule deer between the ages of 3 to 9. On most hunts I end up with a 3 year old type buck. Lately I find myself in the mature bucks only camp. I’ll probably never be a score guy, but if a buck has a good frame, and he’s old that’s...

    Giant Archery Bucks

Yes it sounds like a lot of the bucks he takes don’t live in the “high country”

    Giant Archery Bucks

From what I understand Randy hunts some of the best units in Colorado every year. He probably buys a landowner tag I assume. Then he put s an immense amount of time scouting as has been stated in the posts above. That is not to take away from his hunting/shooting abilities. I’m sure the guy...

    Bucks over 30"

I always thought this buck would go 30”, but I ended up taking the buck he was running with instead. This buck also seemed like he would be close to 30”.

    Help Patterning My BOAL

I really like setting an ambush for the situation you are describing. I’d get there a day or 2 before the season and try to relocate him from a distance, then make a game plan on where to set my ambush. I’m no expert, but I’ve hunted deer using this method with some success, good luck!

Is your angled spotter holding you back?

Great podcast, I’ve always ran a straight spotter. I also run the outdoorsman’s system, but my bino and spotter don’t line up perfectly when I change between the 2. My binos are a little higher. You’ll have to touch on the shims you were talking about in a future podcast.

    Tikka 223 trainer

That actually make alot of sense, my “hunting rifles” are both 700 platform. I bought the tikka and have been shooting more the last 2 months, than I did the last 2 years! I practice a lot more positions instead of just prone. Never thought I’d see the day where I was making 700 yard impacts...

200 inch typical vs 200 inch nontypical

I agree a clean typical 200” buck has to look HUGE! The trashy bucks are cool in their own way though, but if I could pick I’d go with a 200” typical. Biggest buck I have ever seen, would probably go 180.

The higher the better for early mulies?

These are my thoughts exactly, when it comes to scouting/hunting deer. I’ve been in places of Nevada where the bigger bucks were down low near water. In general though bucks prefer steeper rocky terrain, with food and water

    The Top 1% w/ Dioni

Great podcast guys, very entertaining, and informative! You guys made me realize, that at times I get caught using my spotter too much to find deer. Keep them coming guys!

    Southern ID rut timing

In my experience the mule deer rut is earlier in Idaho/washington/northern Nevada, than Colorado or southern Utah. I’ve seen deer rutting in late October in Washington and Idaho(mature bucks not just forkies). Colorado seems to always be at least a week later than other states. I definitely...

    Tikka 223 trainer

I opened up the barrel channel a bit (recommended by a friend), and added a vertical grip. Out of curiosity how many of you think opening the barrel channel is necessary on a tikka?
