I’m thoroughly impressed with alpaca for hunting and fishing. If I’m wearing non-breathable footwear, I’ll incorporate Injinji coolmax liners. I wear Darn Tough everyday, due to their warranty. Alpaca does moisture management noticeably better than merino, for my feet.
Soft shells are niche pieces, IMO. I do like them, but I also don’t backpack hunt. I’m very happy with the current Jetstream and Evo. I use them as wind shells and light precipitation to save wear and tear on my Gore-Tex hard shells. I only wear a hard shell when I have to, for a few reasons...
Sitka Dakota Hoody is the gold standard for this, but I consider it an outerwear jacket and not a layering piece. It’s thick, it’s warm, and 100% windproof with Gore-Tex Infinium (Windstopper).
Simms made a Primaloft Gold hybrid jacket quite a few years ago just like this, but instead of Alpha, it was Polartec Hardface fleece. I still use it occasionally to this day. I’m a fan.
I think the materials (Alpha and Evolve) are here to stay. It’s still a new layer to most outdoor folks. I bet new iterations will be forthcoming as the masses figure out where these pieces fit in.
I personally like the 30D face fabric even if it hinders breathability ever so slightly. The...
Oh, your review and words of wisdom put me at ease buying the MDWi’s last year. It’s a really efficient layering piece. Looking forward to your new review coming up.
I’ve bought two on sale to compliment my MDWi hoodies. I’m a fan for warmer temps or higher exertion type activities. I’m glad to have both pieces to cover most of my kinetic hunting/fishing needs.
I don’t see any love for the SW M&P 15-22 in this thread. Are they junk? I was seriously considering that over a Ruger 10/22 as it would be easier to clean, since I’d run a can on it.
I think they take AR triggers, too, which I’d do.
I run a Ruger American Predator in .22WMR, bedded into a Boyd’s stock, Timney trigger, Griffin Armament Checkmate. I’m tickled with it for small game up to coyotes inside of 100yd w/30gr Vmax. I need to upgrade the scope and it’s perfect for my use.
They have become hit or miss for me, lately. I really like their shell pieces that aren’t billboards, but that’s getting harder to find from them. Their layering pieces used to be much higher quality, though! I do have my eye on their newest Fjord pant. Back to Polartec fabric with this iteration!
My shells obviously have a hood. I prefer insulated pieces to have a hood for everything except duck hunting. I don’t care for baselayer hoodies, and some midlayer hoodies (really depends on the midlayer and how much exertion I anticipate). I regulate further with ball caps and beanies, as needed.
I have a few Gradient pieces from the duck line and like them a lot.
Sitka Black pieces have been really nice for me steelhead fishing. I’m starting to replace a quite a few Simms pieces for Sitka.
Have you had much pilling/pulling of the face fabric on the MDWi? Especially under straps? I think it’s more durable than the 20D Ambient, side by side, but you’ve had far more experience with both, than I. Lots of pictures out there of the Ambient and shoulder straps / packs not mixing well.
