After 5 years of hard hunting chasing gobblers in the Colorado mountains, I finally got it done! After completely missing a shot at a Jake at first light, I began chasing after a rafter of 8-10 turkeys. They were moving up a hill and I ran after them after they crested the top. Luckily, some...
You can google, Craigslist, or look at Rocky Mountain Llama Association for a few options. Check out a few llama ranches first before buying. I volunteered at a llama ranch for a bit which provided valuable experience and allowed me to see a variety of llamas before deciding on the ones I...
I use 308 for all big game -deer, antelope, bear, and elk. I have shot 6 elk with my 308, between 60-250yards and all have gone down within 20 yards. I wouldn’t hesitate shooting out to 400 and would expect similar results. I currently use Barnes TTSX 168gr for my last 3 elk, but any high...
I prefer to gut all my elk and deer. Makes it easier to get the heart and liver which are some of the most nutritious parts of the animal. I also grab the trachea for my dog.
Ha! I started by convincing my wife I needed two llamas. Shortly before I was going to pick them up, I convinced her three was the right number. Several weeks after I had taken the three home, I picked up one more. Going to stop now that I have four llamas....for now lol
Anyone have any success rattling antlers during a 4th season mule deer hunt? I'll be hunting in Colorado next week in any area with limited public land which is typically pretty wooded, meaning no long glassing spots. My plan was to hang out on the edge of a few small openings I have scouted and...
I was looking for llamas for a couple years before I finally pulled the trigger and got a few this summer. Pack llamas are not easy to come by. I have seen between 1k-10k for one 1-2 year old llama, with 2.5k being average for llamas bred from packing sires. I have a long-term knee injury which...
I have killed 5 elk with my 308 (and 8 deer). First three with 165gr Nosler partitions, and the last two with 168 Barnes TTSX. All elk have fallen within 100 yards, with most not making it more than 20-30 yards. I personally feel caliber is the least important (within legal caliber options)...
Just measured the inside space of the trailer at just over 6’ x 7’ or 42sq feet giving me just over 10 sq ft per llama. My llamas aren’t overly big so thinking it should work.
I recently did a rough gross score as I was cleaning the skull for a euro mount. Came out to 153 after rounding down half an inch. Pretty happy with the heavy set antlers and the 5th cheater on the right side for my first buck!
I am cheap so started doing my own Euros. However, cost is only one factor. I like the fact that I can make it myself, in addition to taking out down so my friends and kids can hold and admire the rack up close. In my opinion they look pretty cool too!
By far the furthest shot I have taken in the field. I was practicing up to 400 yards and am set on that being the longest range I am comfortable taking on an animal. It was fun to challenge myself with the 300 yard shot and glad it put him down quickly
Super thankful to tag this awesome 4th season public land buck! This was my first buck and it took some time to accumulate enough points to go on this hunt. It was near my home in Colorado and in an area I am generally familiar with just never hunted big game in before.
Opening morning I...
Shot this small 5x5 bull on my third morning of hunting 2nd season. Was still hunting through some aspens when 3 bulls ran across the mountain less than 40 yards in front of me. They quickly disappeared by the time I got my rifle off my pack. I slowly crept forward until I saw an antler move. I...
1) Make sure you and your wife are on the same page with expectations. First couple years with little ones, I came home mid season to check in. This year I encouraged my wife to plan a trip with her parents, so the kids, wife, and grandparents will be at a resort in Mexico during elk hunting...
I traditionally have hunted mule deer 3rd season CO, which usually works out to be first or second week of November, and have been 100% successful harvesting does. The one year I drew a buck tag, I passed on 3 smaller bucks in hopes of a decent 4 x 4, which I never found. This year I am burning...
