Colorado 61, where are the elk?

My plans of hunting archery season in unit 33 are in jeopardy because of a knee injury. My wife did draw third season cow for unit 61. We are new to the area and are now living in Hotchkiss. We haven't spent enough time in the backcountry here and may not be able to do much scouting in person...

The Internet is silly. We ask questions or respond helpfully and we get comments back that have no value. I don't understand

    First elk

What a blessing. It's so important to know where our food comes from... And to be more self reliant... And to be part of the process. Good for you. Thanks for sharing your success.

    Colorado Elk Either-Sex Question

It's getting harder and harder to draw tags in Colorado... Definitely look into the draw statistics to see the successful draw rates for a second choice in the unit. I'm finding less opportunity to get a successful second choice.

    Colorado Partners

Hey GCMan. Reading your post... Were you able to draw a tag for this season? Hopefully you have not been pushed away from negative responses to not keep looking for a hunt partner. I have done more solo hunts then partnered hunts but find value in both I think it's a good idea to have a...

    Final Gear List for Colorado

The past few years I have switched from carrying a single 0° sleeping bag, to carrying two 20° bags. If it is very cold I use both at the same time. It also allows be to carry a lighter bag when I have my spike camp and I have the possibility to stay the night out in the mountain away from spike...

    Solo Elk Quartering

I agree having 550 cord is very helpful. You can get creative attaching it to aid in the process. I hike with a trekking pole... It comes in handy to prop up a quarter while detaching it from either the front or back of the animal

    Colorado preference point system

For future reference, you must put in during Colorado's primary draw period. The deadline is typically ear ly April. You can enter the code E-P-999-99-P OR if you apply for a hunt and are unsuccessful in the draw you can choose to be awarded a preference point.

Two Weeks in the Colorado Elk Woods

My first couple years I avoided archery hunting during muzzleloader season thinking the added pressure and noise would lower the amount of chances generated... From personal experience I have called in more bulls and generated more chances during the week of muzzleloader. Not sure if the exact...

First year Colorado otc archery elk

I use a first lite short sleeve, first lite kiln hoodie with a gore-tex rain jacket on top when it's cold. First lite Obsidian Moreno pants, again with some gore-tex rain pants when it's cold. Throw in a beanie and some gloves and you will be set. Been in early season snow storms and 90° days...

    PSA- Colorado Wind

We have had unprecedented winds in the hotchkiss area this spring and early summer (units 52,53,63,521). July has been back to more normal wind patterns but we will see moving forward. What we are also having here is an awesome fruit harvest year. Looking forward to fall bear hunts.
