13” Criterion blank, mid length gas, from Precision Firearms.
Pretty happy with it. I get 1-1.25moa at 100 with the Trijicon 1-10 scope and ELD-X or ELD-M factory loads.
6mm ARC, factory ELD-X
Three 60# hogs. The first, broadside shot behind ear dropped DRT. The second, running, broadside into forward chest dropped, kicked a few times and was DRT. The third, running, took one to the chest and one to the neck and dropped, kicked a few times and was done.
In 1978 I bought a Winchester Big Bore 94 XTR in 375 Win. Still have it. Still love it.
I rarely take it out lately. Seeing this thread, I might need to go out and kill one more deer this year.
Another vote in favor of the can. Yes, the 223 is mild in recoil. A can will make it more so, and cut down a whole lot of the muzzle blast and noise.
Is it ‘hearing safe’? No, hearing damage is cumulative and it all adds up. But for the hunting shots where you might not have ear plugs/muffs it...
1.2 moa ain’t bad for a ‘police’ bullet. In my rifles, they do around 1.75-2.25 moa, and the -X, -M and Black all are moa or better.
I guess it’s like the Federal 223T3 FBI loads, the bullets are designed for terminal performance not match-grade groups.

They have loads for ARs and different loads for bolt guns. I use them in an AR and they work very well.
Here are some of my latest AR15 Velocities. All are factory loads; Hornady unless noted..

Check out the epic sub-sonic hunting thread on the 300blktalk.com forum. Lots of good info and lots of successes.
For supers, try the Barnes 100 black tip made specifically for the 300 blk velocities. Works really well. Ive killed many deer and a few hogs.
Folks do get good results with the...
Question for Form, or another similarly experienced person (if such a person exists!)…
Will the TTSX expand better than the TSX?
It seems maybe the tip helps the TMK do its job, and I wonder if the same might be said for the tip on the TTSX.
Thanks!
I’ve killed quite a number of deer and two hogs with the Barnes 100gr blacktip.
If you reload, be sure to get the 110 grain bullet that was designed specifically for the 300 blackout velocities.
On a whim, and because it was only $225, I bought a Keltec P17 as a suppressor host. I put a micro red dot on it and it is an absolute blast. No, it doesn’t group like my Ruger 22/45, but it is closer in design and feel to what I EDC.
Good on ya for investing the time!
It does paint a compelling picture of the potential for the 223 caliber.
While I don’t foresee me doing any big game hunting with the 223, it is certainly working well for many and has lots going for it; light recoil, inexpensive practice ammo, good availability…
I’d go with the short barrel. If you decide to suppress it, it’ll still be maneuverable. And, with the 18” you already have, the 16” would be largely redundant.
The 12” will still give you all the oomph you need for your hunting distances.
With the Barnes 50 gr, be sure to read what you are getting.
Black Hills loads an ‘optimized’ 50 gr for LE use. That bullet is apparently made stouter than the regular 50gr.
If you buy Black Hills, that is what you’ll get. If you buy Barnes ammo or loose bullets, you should be getting the...
Check out snipershide. There is a wealth of info there about precision shooting how-to. I am a 36 year cop, with 30+ years being an instructor, including rifles. Studying snipershide’s articles tightened my groups noticeably.
There are probably the same resources here, I just haven’t taken the...
