The gun I killed my first two deer with was my grandpa’s (Remington 700?) 243. After that my parents got me my first deer rifle, a 1943 Mosin Nagant for $99 from Cabelas. It even came with the bayonet. Somehow that thing is an absolute tack driver and I still take it hunting somewhat frequently...
The more I’ve looked at it the more the 6 ARC has won me over, so I’m definitely leaning more that way. That said, I’ve had good success with my dad’s Grendel and have really come to like it.
TLDR: Ruger American ranch vs Howa 1500 mini barreled action in either 6 ARC or 6.5 Grendel?
I’ve been kicking around the idea of a relatively cheap, lightweight, and compact beater rifle for shooting mainly deer and coyotes around the farm but also stretching out to distance on occasion for...
I would agree most people, myself included, need a lot less than they typically think they do and an easy way to get there is to have a smaller pack. That said, sometimes the “nice-to-haves” are just that; nice to have. Additionally, as you said you usually get a smaller pack with less stuff...
I definitely fall on the side of preferring to have a larger pack cinched down than a smaller one completely stuffed, albeit with some moderation. I certainly don’t want to take an 80L pack on a day trip but, as mentioned earlier, it can be extremely annoying to have your pack packed so...
This is pretty much where military footwear has lived for the last twenty years so that’s probably your best bet for a variety of fits and features. Unfortunately though most of those are typically focused more on being lightweight than supportive so you might have a hard time finding something...
I think yfarm hit the nail on the head here. In my opinion the best/first place to put good money into is quality rain gear and good footwear. Everything else is very situationally dependent so you’re just going to have to spend some time hunting to see what you really need.

Yeah it was subsonic. The listed velocity was about 1050 if I remember right and I was shooting it out of a 16 in barrel so that should have been pretty close to the actual muzzle velocity.
I killed my biggest buck to date with a 300 blk shooting the 150 grain Winchester deer season XPs at about 50 yards. He ran about 20 yards with a complete pass through. I shot another buck with my 300 blk at about 125 yards with the Hornady 190 grain sub-x load. Quartering to shot dropped him in...
I use an older model upland vest for all the upland birds as well as squirrels and rabbits. Works well to keep everything organized and since I’m hunting all of those critters with a dog it helps to consolidate the whistles, treats, and other little things that come with running dogs into one...
This is a great thread so far, I’m excited to follow along and read some of these suggestions. As for my own suggestions, I could go a few directions.

The Ruger American Gen 2 ranch rifle seems like it was made exactly for what you want. 16 inch barrel, already threaded, very accurate, lots of aftermarket support, just pick your flavor. If it were me (which it probably will be in the next year or so) I would go either 6.5 Grendel or 6 Arc. 300...
I don’t have much firsthand experience with this but I’ve spoke with my grandpa some on the topic and I think any of the “mini” action cartridges would be great for this. 5.56 would probably be the most straightforward but a case could be made for 6 arc, 6.5 Grendel, or even a 300 blk. From a...
