I've recently called a few guides in BC and Alsaka and the changes from Kuiu seem to be from frames breaking frequently. So yes, I don't think you guys are changing for the same reasons they are.
Been running a Mystery Ranch for several years, but looking at buying a new pack to shave some weight. Was looking at Kifaru, Kuiu and Stone Glacier, but open to options. My biggest concern is a company needing to change every year because they didn't get it right the first time. Not 100% sure...
I thought the same thing about the lumbar pad as you. To me it was more if how the frame was formed at the lower back with the Kifaru and was straight with the Stone Glacier. The SG felt good with light weight, but nothing like the Kifaru did when I got above 50lbs.

I like the idea for vehicle transport (riding in boat or 4wheeler) as much as normal hiking.For hiking it seems like an added bonus\layer of protection when needed. I do like the way it would protect my Leica spotter and tripod.
