This will be my first year hunting out of a hammock camp, but I've been hanging for years now. I run a Blackbird hammock hammock with a DIY cat cut tarp. I've got 4 quilts now that I choose from depending on the weather.
Phoenix 40° bottom quilt - I've taken this well below freezing with a 20°...
I've wore a harness for 9 or 10 years now. I use a lifeline every time I climb into the hang on stands we have. I don't really like getting in and out of them. However, when I go up in a ladder stand, I generally don't use the lifeline. As soon as I get up the stand, before I even turn around or...
If you're walking into the backcountry with all your gear for an extended hunting trip and have your rifle, I doubt you'd have any trouble. If you went out scouting with just a little food and a little water after setting up camp, you may have an issue. You may not get a ticket (not sure what...
I'm almost all set for my first elk hunt. The plan is to hike in a couple miles. I've got plenty of backcountry experience, just none while hunting. Do you guys use a rifle cover, or just use scope caps? It's a silly question, but I'm curious.
Both of my wife's HTC phones have had absolute garbage cameras in them, although the rest of the hardware is fine. My old Galaxy 2 takes better pictures than her current HTC. I'm going to get her to switch over to the Galaxy line next time she's due.

That's the one I've been using since 6/2014. The threads for the cap are the same as that on Nalgene bottles. My water filter (Katadyn Hiker) attaches via friction into the hole...
Like the others, I've had to use deadman anchors in the snow before. I've also had to pound a stake in about twice it's length by hitting using a stick to "set" the stake like you would push a nail below the surface of wood.
$49 for a resident elk tag seems like a bargain to me.
Here in NY, I pay about $100 for big game, small game, and fishing. That guarantees 1 whitetail buck tag and 1 bear tag. You have chances (or guarantees in some game units) to draw up to two additional doe tags. The bear tag rarely gets...
The rough estimate is the temperature gets 3.5° colder for every 1000' elevation gain. Obviously, local weather, terrain, and other factors can change things a bit. But, using that, you're looking at low 30's and 25° that one night.
I hate packing bulky and heavy things. I also sleep pretty...
We moved from homemade hang on stands (Dad was a metalworker) to ladder stands. The ladder stands are easier to get in and out of, and that's a plus for the older hunters in our group. We usually pay between $50 and $80 for them. Once they get set up, we rarely move them.
An 18 hour drive isn't too bad. I'd leave at 5am and shoot to be there by midnight. I'm looking at a 30 hour drive. Add in food and gas stops and it will probably end up being 33 hours. My buddy and I plan rotate driving every so often.
Thanks for the info. I could always take out the filter and try to shake most of the water out of it. Couple that with keeping it in the sleeping bag with me and it may be alright. I don't really want to boil 2 gallons of water a day :D
I'm a Scotch guy myself. Although, we usually celebrate success in hunting whitetails over a bottle of LaBatt's.
Whenever I go hiking and am around the campfire, I bring along the flask of Scotch. I've got a few different bottles open right now. I've been drinking Highland Park 12, Lagavulin...
I'm not sure if this belongs in the elk subsection or here. (Mods, feel free to move it if you think it belongs over there).
I'm going on my first ever out of state hunt this fall. I'll be hunting elk in CO between 10k' and 11k' elevation during the 1st rifle season. I plan on hiking in 3-5...
