Closest you've been to a Brown Bear?

Had a large one on top of me for about 18 minutes. Neither one of us receiver so much as a scratch. I prayed hard for 19 minutes. Had 7 seven in camp at the same time. They wandered around all night, did a lot of damage, took a chunk out of a ZODIAK-MK II you could push a football through...

    Lets hear your Siwash stories

I have had many and they all "SUCKED". Worst was far down the Alaska Peninsula guiding an archery caribou hunter.

    Sheep hunting alone?

What slips by as a hunter, has clearly depreciated over the last 80 years. What is sad, is that there is zero way to show them.

LONG AGO Massive Caribou Population problems, tell your accounts.

OK, those who lived when and with the massive caribou herds that were an ongoing problem, make those who can't imagine the endless herds of caribou cry with jealousy. Tell them about the years when the Alaska Highway crews used snowplows "YEAR AROUND" to blast the dead caribou off the highways...

Kodiak bear DB224 Uganik Lake draw WOW!

There is a good, cleared trail back of the cabin. It goes up to open grass fields. Opposite side of lake is thick. Going up the creek that flows into the lake is pleasant, more like open woods, Mostly Cottonwood trees.

    Reasons for being Unsuccessful?

"THIS" is what is wrong with hunting. And the sad thing is it can not be explained to those who never had the gift of knowing what hunting was before it was corrupted.

The "MONSTERS" will be plowing snow next week, coming down the mountain.

Typically, March 10 to 14'th the big boys are coming down the mountain back of the cabin, plowing down to the beach. Where generally, the first green sprouts show up a week or two later. Till then it is winter, or highway killed moose and freeze-dried salmon from last fall. It is fascinating to...

Kodiak bear DB224 Uganik Lake draw WOW!

I have hunted and guided there, maybe ten to twelve times in last 54 years. Try quickly to tie-up the use of the cabin on the lake. if the cabin is committed to others, beg, cry, snivel, wine, do try to negotiate a co-usage. An inflatable boat will help a bunch. Going up the feed creek is fun...

    Traditional Alaskan Adventure 1926

I agree, I've spent 54 years as an adult tramping allover Alaska. I was blown-away by that video, and in 1926. Any of you want to take a wild guess as to the draw weight of those bows. Seemed easy to draw. Those guys were lean and tough in their 40's.

Seal Finger / Bear Finger....A Cautionary Tale.

Sam Fejjus (sp) or his brother lost three fingers to the same thing, from skinning a Brown Bear. This was roughly 40'ish years ago.

    2023 Haul Road Caribou Hunt

Be prepared for "possible" choking smoke from forest/tundra fires close or even a hundred plus miles away. In my experience smoke can end a Brooks Range faster and with higher probability then yucky weather in August/September period. You simply can't hunt, because you can't see or breath (your...
