A few years ago I picked up a Leofoto Ranger LS-284C with the LH36 ball head. I chose this over the next larger one, I believe the 364? I had them both for a time being and could not tell much of a difference while shooting. Both allowed me to be accurate to at least 500 yards in the seated...
I assume the scope is second focal plane? A long time ago I used a 3-9x Ziess BDC reticle. I did not change the zero, but could increase or decrease the scope magnification to adjust the scale of the markings to match the trajectory.
For example, zeroed at 2000 DA the 30-06, 180 grain bullet...
I did not read all the posts, so I apologized if this info was provided already.
At 580 yards, 1 MIL is equal to 20.88” (3.6” x 5.8). To adjust for the 3.6” of additional drop you experienced than what estimated, add another .17 MIL (round up to 2 MIL), or a solution of 3.3 MIL at 580 yards.
I used a mechanical BH for the first time last season (fixed blades only since 1992), a Sevr 1.5. I was impressed with the results on a Kentucky Whitetail buck with a 27” draw, 65#, 428 gr. arrow. Easy full pass through with A LOT of blood on the ground. I am using them again this year, just had...
I am really liking the Black Eagle Spartan 350 shafts, 8 grains/inch. They are 6mm, accepting the BE stainless steel flanged insert and an added BE 30 grain weight. With 100 grain head a finished arrow at your length would be approximately 410-425 grains depending on fletching choice. The...
I prefer MIL, and Nightforce. My two primary scopes are a FFP MIL-R and a SFP MIL-R. Not the most popular reticle option I gather, but nice for me to standardize on one reticle. I have learned to use them well.
I have been shooting the 147’s since approximately 2019. In my rifle, 24” Bartlein, with RL16, I am at 2745 fps average MV. At a 8000’ DA (elk country) the bullet drops below 2000 fps at 760 yards, 1800 fps at 970 yards. Elevation/drift at 500 yards is 2.42 mil/.52 mil (10 mph wind)
With a...
6mm shafts are a great option. Black Eagle Spartan and Easton Sonic 6.0 are the only two I am aware of, but both make great arrows with excellent components. I am currently shooting BE Spartan shafts.
I have owned the M&P Compact 22 for approximately 8 years, still running great. Purchased it for my younger daughter to learn about handguns, but I really enjoy it too.
Zero the scope for 100 yards. If during the hunt you wish to carry the gun with a 200 yard zero, or calculated MPBR, dial to that from the 100 yard zero.
To ensure downward pressure on the shaft at the nock end, I serve a nock point on the bottom only. The bottom knot of the loop attaches below the tied in nock point, the top knot attaches to the string above the arrow nock. If it developed nock pinch, it always applies slight downward pressure...
The several elk I shot (recovered all) between 2011-2016 were with my lowest energy producing setup. 2008 Bowtech Equalizer, 27” at 60#. Arrows were Easton Axis 400, stock inserts, and 100/125 grain Slick Trick Standards. TAW was 450’ish possibly, not positive on speed, but 250-260 fps is what I...
Just for comparison. I shoot a Lift 29.5 at 27”/67#/85% LO with a 403gr. arrow at 281 fps. I would guess at 25” draw my bow/ arrow combination would be close to 263 fps.
The BE Spartan 350 is working well for me. Internal components, additional insert weights available, and I pair with Bohning A nocks. Very accurate and forgiving.
Fletching yourself is the way to go. Freedom to test different vanes and configurations. Repairs are timely made. I damaged the fletching on an arrow shooting this afternoon after work. Tonight after dinner it took me less than 10 minutes to re-fletch. The arrow is ready to shoot tomorrow.
Good advice so far. Also check with fellow members at the shooting range you joined, I am sure someone there would be happy to assist you get started hunting the NE. Someone may belong to a hunting camp that will invite you along with them, or just wants a hunting partner and doesn’t mind...
